Many of us have sat at our current jobs and thought longingly of working somewhere else. In fact, a lot of us have jokingly said we wish we could get paid for hanging out with animals.
Well now, one animal organization is offering just that — a paid position with housing on a remote Greek island. All you have to do is take care of 55 cats.
“A very special position and living circumstance on offer on a little Greek island called Syros (a small paradise no less!) for a mature and genuinely passionate cat lover who knows how to handle many cats and would love their company!!” read an official post from the organization’s Facebook page. “I am looking for someone who can take over the daily running of my Greek cat sanctuary in my absence.”
God’s Little People Cat Rescue cares for cats big and small on the little island, which frankly, looks like paradise.
The job involves taking care of the cats, including feeding and watering them, giving them medicine, and providing for any special needs. Ideally, the candidate should be responsible and have some basic nursing knowledge, but the primary criterion is being a cat lover.
“You’ll no doubt thrive best if you are the type of person who appreciates nature and likes tranquility – and rest comfortably in your own company,” read the job listing.
“That said, you’ll never feel lonely in the company of the cats and you’ll be expected to live with a small handful of cats in your house. From experience, the job is most suitable for someone 45+ years of age, who’s responsible, reliable, honest, practically inclined – and really, with a heart of gold! Apart from feeding the cats, the cats will also need heaps of love and attention.”
For many of us, that job sounds like an absolute dream.
Living on a remote, beautiful island with no one but a bunch of sweet, cuddly kitties? Sign me up!
The job also requires transporting any sick or injured kitties to the vet as well as interacting occasionally with feral or stray cats, which requires some special knowledge about how wild animals like to be treated.
The quiet island of Syros is a genuine paradise, as you would expect from any secluded Aegean hangout.
The job also pays a part-time salary but provides a house with water and electricity. For what it’s worth, a part-time salary in Greece is only about 400Є a month or a little less than $450, so you won’t be living large. But with your housing and utilities covered, you wouldn’t need very much!
Unfortunately, the job posting closed in the summer of 2018 and is no longer open.
The cat sanctuary actually had to ask people to stop sending applications!
God’s Little People Cat Rescue cares for both domestic and wild cats on the island, working closely with local vets. They provide food and medical care, as well as neutering for all the cats and try to find forever homes for domestic felines while also providing long-term care for cats with chronic health issues.
