Anyone who has survived any form of abuse knows that it leaves a mark on your future interactions with those around you. Unfortunately, the same is true for animals. This was the case for a stray dog who had been lost at the Evans Creek campground in Washington, near Mount Rainier. Fortunately, a clever boy and girl were able to help get this little guy the help he needed.

The story begins with a young woman named Amanda Guarascio and her friend Dylan Parkinson, who stumbled across a cute dog on the Lost & Found Pets Wa State Facebook page. The poor animal was malnourished and seemingly wouldn’t budge from where it was camped out in the park.

Since they were close by, Guarascio and Parkinson decided to explore for themselves. Sure enough, they found the animal in the park and were also unable to lure it out with food. Though it was unclear why he wouldn’t move, the two girls suspected the dog had been abused in the past. After a few failed attempts, Guarascio had an idea.

Rather than trying to coax the animal with food, she decided to try a different approach. Instead, she tried lying down on the ground and pretending to be injured. Though the dog was skeptical, he did move closer to try and investigate. It was a delicate process but Guarascio was able to get closer and closer to the dog until she finally got a collar around him.

After affectionately naming the little guy Baby Bear, Guarascio and Parkinson carried him into the car and rushed him to a vet. Once he was stabilized, the Baby Bear spent 30 days in a nearby shelter before he was finally adopted by a loving family where he could grow up, safe and sound. Suffice it to say, it looks like he’s making a full recovery.

Above all, this story is incredible for Guarascio and Parkinson’s compassion and ingenuity in rescuing this little guy. Although it’s all too easy to notice problems and not take action, these two girls decided to do whatever they could to help. As a result, Baby Bear now has a family to call his own. If there’s anything to take away from this tale, it’s that we all have more influence on the world around us than we think. As Baby Bear’s recovery proves, great things can happen when we’re willing to open our hearts.
