“I saw the picture of the dog and thought, ‘That dog looks kind of familiar.’ Then I read the name — it was Chloe. The same spelling as my old dog,” Nicole recalled. “I thought that was such a coincidence.”
When you’re meant to be with someone, nothing in the world can prevent that from being so. Even though Nicole Renae and her dog Chloe were separated for years, fate brought them back together.
Nicole got Chloe as a gift for her 10th birthday.
Her grandmother new that she got lonely being an only child and decided that her granddaughter needed a companion. Nicole and Chloe became best friends over the next four years.
“I just loved her to death,” Nicole told The Dodo. “She was my best friend. She was such a sweet dog. She’d lick your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”
But when Nicole was 14-years-old she had to surrender her dog to the humane society.
Her dad got a new job that required his home office to be free of audible distractions.
“He was told we couldn’t have any pets. Chloe was very yappy,” Nicole recalls. “We had no choice. I was just a kid, so obviously didn’t have any choice in the matter. It was heartbreaking. I didn’t want to get rid of my dog.”
Nicole was completely heartbroken.
“I just felt so sick and sad about it,” Nicole said. “I thought I’d never see or hear from her ever again. As the years went on, I always thought about her. I once called the humane society to try to find out what happened to her, but they couldn’t tell me anything. So, I never knew.”
When Nicole started a family of her own, she wanted to make sure that her daughter grew up with the experience of having a dog in the home.
She was going to adopt a puppy but changed her mind when she saw a photo of senior dog up for adoption on Facebook.
It actually wasn’t. That dog was actually her old pal Chloe.
“She just ran up to me and started licking my face,” she said. “As the day went on, all these characteristics just reminded me of my old dog.”
Nicole and Chloe seemed to recognize each other even though the fact that they could be reunited eight years later was farfetched.
“She just kept hugging me. I was crying — it reminded me so much of my Chloe,” Nicole said. “I never thought I’d see my dog again, but I just knew in my heart that it was her.”
Nicole’s family, however, wasn’t convinced.
“My whole family thought I was nuts,” Nicole said. “Everybody thought I was crazy.”
So, the family decided to do a little investigating.
Chloe had been microchipped, so the family reached out to her old veterinarian’s office for her ID number.
They then took Chloe to her new vet to get her scanned.
“The numbers were an exact match. It was her,” Nicole said. “I literally felt like I’d won the lottery. It was just the best feeling. I thought I’d never see her again.”
Thankfully, Nicole learned that Chloe had been adopted by a couple right after she was surrendered. She was returned to the shelter after they passed away many years later. She was returned by a second foster family after they were unable to keep her.
Now Chloe says that her family feels a little bit more complete now that 11-year-old Chloe is with her again.
“I’m so happy to have her back. I get so excited to come home from work to see her each day,” Nicole said. “This is just the best thing. She’s made herself right at home. Chloe is happy. I think she knows now that she’ll be with me forever.”
What a miraculous story!
“All of us have that pet in our past we would give anything to see again – for whatever reason we no longer have them,” one commenter wrote. “This is a truly feel-good story on multiple levels.”
