A family from Adelaide, Australia was coming home to enjoy the holiday season when they found that this year’s holiday surprise wasn’t under the tree.
Instead they found a live koala bear hanging out in their tree. The family didn’t know what to think about their visitor or even how it broke in.
So they decided to call a local koala rescue hotline and…
The family knew they couldn’t handle a koala safely on their own. So they did, what any responsible homeowner could do, and called an animal rescue hotline for help.
At first, the call was treated as a prank, since they couldn’t believe that a koala broke into a home just to hop up on a decorated Christmas tree. But eventually the family convinced them to send help.
The team worked together to get Daphne out…
By this time, the koala had been given the nickname ‘Daphne’. The animal rescue crew noticed how tightly Daphne was clinging to the tree and discussed what to do.
Off-camera, the owner of the tree told the animal rescue team that she was less concerned about the tree getting damaged, as long as Daphne was removed safely and no one was hurt. Since they didn’t need to worry about the tree, it made their removal plan a lot easier.

The plan they came up with was deceptively simple. They’d use a blanket to cover the koala’s head so it’d make it easier and safer to handle the animal. They found that Daphne wasn’t willing to let go, so they literally had to shake her out of the tree.
One of the rescuers even got a little nip for his trouble, as they put Daphne in a safe cage.
All that was left was to take Daphne back to…
The rescue squad took Daphne to a nearby forested area where they could hear other koalas like her. After explaining the plan, they set the cage down and opened the door.
Daphne hops out, takes one last look at her human hosts, then climbs up the tree to rejoin it’s companions.
It’s hard to imagine what we would do if we found a wild koala in our tree. But just like they said in the video, it had to be an incredible experience.
