It’s normal for cattle to wander off from the herd and end up someplace they shouldn’t be.
But some of them wander to places you’d never expect, and getting them back can be a huge ordeal.
This cow ended up in a lake with no way back to shore.
No one knows how or why this cow ended up so deep in the middle of a lake.
Maybe it tried to cross, or it got swept into the water. It’s anyone’s guess.
What’s essential was getting it out, and that would be easier said than done.
A cow can weigh 720 kilograms on average. That’s a lot of animal to try and help out of the water.
Bessie is no water buffalo, so these people needed to work quickly.
These friends happened to catch the eye of the stranded bovine and began to help.
The plan was to escort the cow back to shore before she drowned.
It sounds simple until you try it.
It became clear they had their work cut out for them. Still, this cow’s life was on the line, and they would help it.
Here was the plan: get a rope around the cow’s neck and use it to guide her to shore from the boat.
When they gave it a shot, they realized the rope made it harder for the cow to lift her head above the surface.
Okay, new plan: one gets in the water and swims beside the cow, manually holding her head above the water.
So one of their friends dove into the lake and supported the poor cow’s head. It seemed to be working!
But that wouldn’t be enough.
They needed all hands working together for this one.
So a couple more of them reached over from the boat and supported the cow with their hands.
With all those helping hands keeping the cow above the water, the boat driver began sailing back to the nearest shore. Hang in there, girl! You’re going to be okay!
After returning to shore, the cow finally set foot on land and was safe.
Just how long was she in the water?
She was still confused and scared by the whole thing – I mean, who wouldn’t be? But at least she was on dry land.
But in her confusion, she tried headbutting some of her rescuers. Hey, they saved you! Calm down a bit.
She did just that. After they removed the rope from her head and stepped back, she calmed down and seemed to realize they rescued her.
Now, she could go back and graze wherever she wanted.
She had one heck of a day, and I wonder if she’ll ever attempt crossing the lake again.
Of course, all credit is due to these people who busted their backs off to save her.
That was not easy!
