Who doesn’t love to go to the zoo or aquarium and see seals, especially cute baby seals?
There’s something about their cute little faces, big eyes, and chill personalities that makes you want to cuddle up with one.
In this adorable video, we see a baby elephant seal pup say hello to a group on an expedition in Antarctica in one of the cutest ways imaginable.
What is an elephant seal?
There are two types of elephant seals, which are northern and southern. Northern elephant seals are found primarily near California and Baja, California.
The adorable baby elephant seal we see in this video is a southern elephant seal because this was on an expedition in Antarctica, where the southern ones live.
Southern elephant seals are the largest of all seals, for the males can be over 20 feet long and weigh up to 8,800 pounds, or 4.5 tons.
Also, northern elephant seals tend to only live up to 9 years, while southern elephant seals can live up to 22 years! They get their name not from their size, but actually from their trunk-like inflatable snout.
This video we see is from an expedition with Cheesemans’ Ecology Safari to Antarctica. Here, they landed on Livingston Island to observe a Gentoo penguin colony, where there happened to be adult elephant seals lounging.
They were amazed to see such a young elephant seal on land and especially excited when he approached them!
You can tell they are professionals because it would be so hard to resist petting such an adorable baby elephant seal!
They let him come up to them and interact with them and stated if they didn’t leave, he probably would’ve napped with them.
They also said he is known as a “weaner”- a seal recently weaned and about 2-3 months old.
This was an extremely rare occurrence, and this group is quite a lucky group since this does not happen often.
It is always lovely to see a natural interaction between humans and animals.
The video starts with the baby elephant seal stretching all the way back, while he looks like he is doing yoga.
Soon he waddles over to the group and just looks at them for a while.
He starts plopping his body even closer, to the point of nudging a lady’s leg gently.
They eventually have to change camera angles because this adorable baby elephant seal is blocking the view of the original camera because he is so close!
He continues to sniff their legs and looks like he is enjoying laying with his new friends.
Even at the end of the video, we hear multiple people on the expedition say what an experience it was, looking thoroughly in awe themselves.
Such a heartwarming moment to see, and there’s plenty more where this came from.
