Anybody who grew up in the country was likely warned about the dangers of coyotes at an early age. For those who don’t know, coyotes are wilder relatives of dogs that are more closely related to wolves, though they aren’t as big. Coyotes also tend to be scavengers whereas wolves are known to hunt, although coyotes can also be dangerous and have been known to hunt people and small animals as well.
For those in the know, modern dogs evolved away from wolves and coyotes as a result of humans selectively breeding them for mutual advantage. The dogs took advantage of the food and protection that humans could provide, whereas the dogs could provide some additional protection from other wild animals.
One video of a coyote attack which recently resurfaced shows just how protective a good dog can be.
The video was uploaded to YouTube by user jdpmep.
The clip shows security camera footage of a driveway in the country with two dogs, Trixxie and Happy, a black chi-weenie and a black Rottweiler, respectively. Trixxie was wandering around on her chain when something came sprinting out of the woods at full speed.
Sure enough, it was an attack by a wild coyote.
As the footage shows, the coyote struck at Trixxie and tackled her to the ground.
The two were wrestling in the dirt for a few moments until the coyote seemingly thought it had won the contest. After that, he picks Trixxie up in his grip and begins to carry her off—that is, until Happy sees what’s going on. Without missing a beat, Happy charges at the coyote and tackles him from behind, forcing him to release little Trixxie. With the attacker confused, Trixxie has a chance to scramble to her feet and get away.
After a moment more, Happy successfully chases the coyote all the way out of the frame and away from the driveway.
So far, the coyote attack footage has amassed more than 10 million views on YouTube and it’s not hard to see why.
Although we’ve all been warned to look out for coyotes, it’s rare that we actually see one in the flesh. And needless to say, it’s even rarer to get footage of one attacking another animal. Above all, the video shows how loyal and brave our dogs can be under the right circumstances.
As additional context for the video, the user who uploaded it mentioned that the entire event happened at 7:00 am and in an area near a city where these attacks are rare. The family had never witnessed any coyote sightings in the region before this attack and the dog had only been outside for a few minutes when the coyote decided to make his move.
Above all, this clip may be a good reminder that we shouldn’t turn our back on nature.
As the rest of the YouTube channel shows, this was not the last run-in with coyotes that the family would have. The wild animals continued to terrorize the dogs at least a few more times captured on video until the owner was forced to hunt one of them down. For anyone who lives in the country and has heard of roving coyotes, let this story be a lesson to you. Make sure your dogs stay safe and within sight or something like this could happen to them, too!
In any event, a special salute to Happy who sprung into action to save the day!
