Four tiny kittens were born in a gap between two buildings, their mom thought that would be the perfect spot to keep them safe as she went out to find some food. Heartbreakingly, tragedy struck.
The mother cat was struck by a car while she was out – leaving the four newborn kittens alone in the gap between the two brick walls.
The kittens were far too small to make it out of the gap on their own, not only was their size and age an issue, but there was lots of garbage and debris blocking their way. Things were looking grim for the little kittens.
Scared, alone, and hungry, the kittens instinctively began to cry and mew as loud as they could. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan walking by heard them and called the RSPCA.
“The member of the public who called us about this heard the kittens crying through the night and thought the sound was a trapped bird,” Joe Tambini, an animal collection officer with the RSPCA, said in a press release.
Officer Tambini went to investigate the noises – and when he peered inside, he found a pair of eyes staring back at him. When he got a bit closer, he saw that they were, in fact, kittens.
One thing that he immediately noticed was that they were far too young to be without their mother, at this point, they were certainly still nursing. He knew that he had to get them out as quickly as possible, but it wasn’t going to be easy as they were quite a ways back in the gap between the walls.
“Peering down the gap, you could just make out this bundle of fluff and the glint of two eyes,” Tambini said. “They were about 12 feet back inside the gap. I managed to get one of the kittens out. It was one of the braver ones who came close enough for me to reach.”
After managing to rescue one of the kittens, he realized the others were too far back – he needed the help of London Fire Services.
The firemen arrived, and due to the closeness of the two walls, they were afraid they’d need to knock one down to rescue them. Thankfully, with a bit of ingenuity, they were able to rescue the remaining kittens with a grasper tied to the end of a rope.
Once all of them were safe, they were rushed to RSPCA Putney Animal Hospital for medical evaluation. Each one seemed to be suffering from a mild case of the cat flu, but miraculously, they were otherwise healthy.
“The kittens are all in a good condition and very sweet,” Tambini said. “I was actually really taken with them and I’m hoping I might be able to rehome one of them myself!”
It’s going to take a few weeks before the kittens are healthy and old enough to be adopted out to homes, but we’re certain they will all find their forever homes. Officer Tambini has even expressed interest in taking in a kitten himself.
“I was really taken with them. I’m hoping I might be able to rehome one of them myself,” he said.
