Imagine being out on a fishing boat, the gentle sway of the waves, the anticipation of a catch, and then reeling in… a kangaroo?
Sounds implausible, right?
Yet, this was the surreal experience of a fisherman who found himself in the unexpected role of a rescuer for a stranded marsupial.
The story unfolds with Kangala Wildlife Rescue receiving an urgent call from the fisherman.
He was en route to the shore, carrying with him an exhausted kangaroo he had discovered in the ocean. But as the journey progressed, a new challenge arose.
The kangaroo began to stir from its fatigue, and the last thing one would want on a boat is an agitated kangaroo hopping about.
Recognizing the urgency, the rescuers swiftly moved into action.
Their first task was to sedate the kangaroo, ensuring both its safety and that of the people on board.
Once subdued, the next step was to transport this unexpected passenger to the wildlife center for a thorough health check.
At the vet, the kangaroo underwent a comprehensive examination.
The primary concerns were dehydration and hypothermia.
Fluids were administered to address the dehydration, and efforts were made to bring the kangaroo’s body temperature back to normal.
Throughout this process, the rescuers discovered their new ward was a male.
With the immediate medical concerns addressed, the focus shifted to the kangaroo’s recovery.
Rest was paramount.
The little fighter needed time to recuperate, to gather strength, and to prepare for his eventual return to the wild.
The day of release brought with it a mix of emotions.
The location chosen for the release was close to where the kangaroo had been found.
This decision was strategic, aimed at giving the kangaroo the best shot at reconnecting with his group, affectionately termed a ‘mob’.
The release process was meticulous.
The kangaroo was placed in a specialized bag, ensuring he remained calm and safe.
As the sedative wore off, the anticipation was palpable. Everyone present was eager to witness the culmination of their collective efforts.
And then, in a fleeting moment, it happened.
The kangaroo burst forth from the bag, sprinting towards freedom. The speed of his departure was so swift that if one blinked, they might have missed it.
