The hallways were choked with smoke.
In the middle of this ongoing disaster, a firefighter was attending to a soul. They knew this was someone they couldn’t leave behind.
If only they have the proper equipment to save this dog’s life.
The numbers may vary from country to country, but thousands of pets die from residential fires.
Most of them die of suffocation.
And unlike us who have the proper gear to administer first aid in these kinds of scenarios, dogs don’t have that lifeline.
The West Midlands Fire Service responded to a fire in Birmingham.
In the video, a team of firefighters was searching the building for others that they could still save.
With the smoke alarm screeching over their heads, the firefighters kept their cool, especially when one of them carefully drags out a puppy.
The team quickly attended to the dog before it suffered asphyxiation. In emergencies concerning fires, this is one of the most common causes of death.
But that wouldn’t happen to this pup.
They quickly made their way out of the apartment complex.
Weaving through doors and hallways, and passing by other firefighters who were bringing more equipment in, you can hear one of them saying “Dog’s coming outside. I think it’s still alive.”
They gave it a fighting chance.
Thanks to the team’s urgency, the dog made it out to open grounds.
Three firefighters immediately huddled over the dog to administer first aid. Not long ago, the options to save this poor puppy would’ve been little.
But thanks to newer technologies and initiatives that push for animal welfare, this puppy gets to have a fighting chance.
Animal Oxygen masks
As shown in the video, the puppy was fitted with an animal oxygen mask.
It’s specifically designed to help pets who were overwhelmed by the effects of smoke from a fire.

The West Midlands Fire Service is the second-largest station in the UK outside of London and all of their fire engines in each of their 38 stations carry this equipment.
The puppy’s breaths were shallow and weak.
But one could see that he was still holding on. If these firefighters didn’t give up on him, he couldn’t give up on himself either.
With steady breathing, the puppy tried to recover. At that point, all they could do is wait.

A full recovery
Fortunately, the puppy regained full his strength. It even took its snout out of the mask just so he could give his rescuers some wet, sloppy kisses.
The team was elated and they saw first-hand what their new equipment could do.
A donation that saves lives
The life-saving gear was donated by Smokey Paws to the fire station.
“46% of households in the UK have pets and with over 40,000 house fires year, unlike humans, pets will normally hide in houses from fire and therefore suffer smoke inhalation much quicker than a human,” they state on their website.
Their mission is to provide emergency services across the UK with these specially designed masks so they can save as many pets as they can.
