Who would have thought that a simple air horn could save a dog’s life?

It was broad daylight in California. Everyone was busy with their daily chores.

It was 11 in the morning, and in the home surveillance of Larry and Kerri Ruiz, a distress barking was first heard.

Then, a black dog was seen running. Then another dog, a Chihuahua, was seen trying its best to escape the fast coyote behind him.

In a split second, the scary coyote was able to catch up with the small dog. Immediately burying his sharp teeth on the poor pup’s neck.

It was a scary video to watch.

The poor Chihuahua can’t even defend itself. Soon, the coyote ran, with poor Chico, still in his mouth.

Coyotes are pretty dangerous predators.

It has 42 sharp teeth and can run as fast as 40 MPH when it’s out chasing its prey. Chico, the tiny Chihuahua, didn’t have a chance against this coyote.

The owners, Kerri and Larry heard the distressing cries of their beloved pet, but it was too late.

Larry immediately ran outside, and then we hear Kerri’s shaky voice telling her husband that there was a coyote outside.

“They took Chico! Oh my God! The coyote just took Chico!” Kerri shouted as she felt helpless. She knew time was very important if she wants to see her Chico again.

Can you imagine seeing your pet dog being taken by a coyote? No wonder Kerri’s voice was so scared. We can’t even imagine what Chico was feeling at that moment.

Kerri’s husband, Larry, along with their son, didn’t waste any time and tried to find the culprit. That’s when Kerri remembered their secret weapon. She immediately ran back into her home and got their hand-held air horn.

Kerri immediately gave her weapon a blast, and it worked!

Even at a distance, the coyote was startled by the loud sound and was able to drop Chico and flee.

According to Larry, their home had plenty of hand-held air horns. He has them in every entrance and exit. It was their best defense because they knew that California had plenty of coyotes.

They ran fast to rescue the poor injured and terrified dog.

Chico’s family brought the small dog to the vet, and that’s where they found out that the poor pup suffered puncture wounds and one broken rib.

All it took was some medicine, a plastic head cone, and lots of love from his family, and Chico all healed up in just a few weeks.

Though, this incident has given Larry and Kerri an important lesson.

“Never, ever, EVER let their animals outside unattended,” said Kerri in her interview with Inside Edition.

To add to that, the couple recommends families stock up on air horns. You don’t know when you’ll need them.

The couple now makes sure that they’re with Chico whenever the pup wants to exercise. They are also very thankful for the decision to keep their handy-dandy air horns in their home.
