When a family in Barstow, California was evicted from their San Bernadino County home, they left heaps of trash on the curb Thursday for Friday morning garbage pick up.
They also left their two dogs in a cage on that curb alongside all their trash.
Apparently, these adorable living breathing beings were nothing more than trash to them. So insignificant that they couldn’t even bother to drop them off at a shelter.
“These people were evicted and they are the ones that left them outside not [the] landlord just to be clear. They had been loading up their stuff all day since yesterday,” Angelina Trujuillo-Vargas wrote on Facebook.
Thankfully Allen Boartfield got a call about the poor pups out on the curb and called Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue for help.
“Literally from trash to treasure: Update on babies left for the morning trash pick up in a crate,” the rescue organization’s Facebook post read. “We have confirmed the owners were evicted and these poor babies were the last to be left on the curb with the trash. We have named them Treasure and Catch. Dark is Treasure a little girl, light is a boy and is Catch.”
And the dogs were found in a rather deplorable condition. Treasure was so matted she couldn’t move without being in pain.
“Catch is coughing, so we’ll need to wait until that clears a bit before we can neuter and bathe him. Treasure is all matted, she will get grooming and spayed tomorrow,” the rescue organization wrote.
When Dream Fetchers posted photos of the abandoned pups on their Facebook page, people were completely heartbroken.
“I’m sick to my stomach,” said one Facebook user.
“OMG. Sick people. Glad they are safe now,” another said.
But the Dream Fetchers advised that the worse was now behind these two poor pups.
“We promise you Treasure and Catch you are not trash, you are a treasure,” Dream Fetchers said. “On to a wonderful life.”
Boartfield said the dogs were extremely frightened when they were found.
While Treasure quickly warmed up to Boartfield, Catch never did as he was very protective over his sister.
“Catch is very attached to Treasure,” Boartfield told The Dodo. “So attached that, when I moved Treasure into another kennel, even though Catch was very scared still, he ran across my lap to be in the same kennel as Treasure.”
While Treasure is almost fully recovered, it’s going to take Catch a little more time to get there.
“Some hearts mend more quickly than others,” Herold said. “Nobody is giving up on him!”
