How could someone just abandon their dog like this?

Anyone following the news has seen that the weather across America has taken a turn for the cold.

Just recently, the East Coast was rocked by a major nor’easter—also known as a bomb cyclone—which has produced icy winds and lots of snowfall. As temperatures plummet, many New Englanders are finding themselves in the midst of one of the coldest winters in recent memory. Everyone knows the importance of staying safe and bundled up in these conditions. Still, not everyone has the same safe and loving conditions to stay in during these hard times.

One animal, in particular, had a very hard time of things.

In a story out of Salem, Massachusetts, a little Pekingese had a tough day.

Aside from the unusually cold seven-degree weather, it was a normal day at the Northeast Animal Shelter. Though the shelter typically opens at 10 am, a car pulled in at around 8:30. Out of the car jumped a woman wearing camouflage with a little dog in tow. A man was with them as well. Though the two tried the door, they soon saw it was locked.

What they did next was shocking.

Instead of coming back at a more appropriate time, the couple decided to leave their dog tied to a bench outside.

After accomplishing that, the two drove away (though security cameras caught their car in their footage). Though the dog was safely found and brought inside to warm up, the poor thing had to wait about 45 minutes before it was discovered. Needless to say, the staff at the shelter were very upset at the irresponsible couple’s behavior.

To bring awareness to what had happened, the Northeast Animal Shelter wrote a Facebook post detailing what had happened.

In it, they wrote:

“Whoever you are that left your dog tied to an outside bench at our shelter this morning – she was discovered 45 min later after being outside in 7 degree weather. Maybe we’ll never know the name she has always known, what she has been through, or why you didn’t go to another door at our building to talk to someone instead of just leaving her tied up but she gobbled up a warm meal and is wrapped in blankets and getting warm. She’ll be safe with us until she finds a new home with someone who will love her forever.”

Fortunately, the shelter also posted an update later saying that the little dog—renamed Icelyn—was making a swift recovery.

As the post said:

“Icelyn, as we are now calling our little dog tied to the bench this morning, is doing well. Our vet has taken a look at her and she has no signs of frostbite, she is assumed to be about 5 years old and has been generally well cared for.”

While it’s fortunate that Icelyn was ok, this is a reminder to all of us to make sure our pets and animals are well-taken care of during the winter.

Here’s to hoping Icelyn finds a safe new home very soon!
