What’s the most incredible sight you’ve seen at a pool party? Most people would reply with something that’s probably best kept to their imaginations, but here’s something we can talk about: elephants.
Now, if an elephant crashes your pool party in the US, you know something has seriously gone wrong.
Elephants mostly hang out in the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa and the rainforests of Central and West Africa. There are also elephants scattered around South Asia and Southeast Asia, where the climate is nice and warm.
If you want to have a good chance of seeing an elephant, head to these parts of the world.
To be even more certain of coming up close with these magnificent beasts, you’ll want to visit a safari camp.
Yep, safari camps really are a thing, and they’re just as magical as they sound. Think opening your curtains to a view of wild animals roaming free, and you’ve pretty much got the gist of what they are.
Elephant Sands is one of the most popular safari camps in Africa, and it’s easy to see why!
The bush lodge and campsite is based in the north-east of Botswana, surrounding a natural waterhole that elephants wash and play in.
When you’re staying at Elephant Sands, not only are you guaranteed to cross paths with an elephant, it’ll probably only be meters away from you!
And elephants aren’t the only kind of wildlife that visits the campsite, either.
Because there are no fences surrounding the property, all sorts of creatures are able to roam freely. Whenever an animal fancies a drink or a bath, it stops by for a swim in Elephant Sands’ waterhole.
But sometimes waterholes get a bit samey for elephants, and they set their sights on something different.
That’s how one visitor ended up in extremely close contact with a huge elephant… as the resort’s swimming pool.
Imagine lying back with a beer, wondering why your sun had suddenly been blocked – and opening your eyes to see an elephant standing above you?
It’d be enough to make anyone’s breath catch, but luckily, elephants are usually gentle giants, and don’t get aggressive towards humans or other animals.
When this elephant came to check out the swimming pool, he was polite enough not to knock over a guest’s beer!
He simply headed over to the pool and took a drink, as casually as if he does this all the time (and he probably does).
Before anyone panics, this swimming pool doesn’t contain chlorine, so it’s safe for the elephant to drink – and probably a bit cleaner than the stuff in the natural waterhole!
Swimmers in the pool could only look on in awe as the elephant proceeded to empty their pool bit by bit with every drink of water he took.
Just look at him go! He clearly knows who gets to make the rules around here.
After a few dregs of water, the elephant must have decided he’d had enough, because he turned around and lumbered off as suddenly as he came.
Have you ever seen anything as breathtaking as this? Imagine being in the pool at the time – it’s something you’d remember forever.
