Lauren Buckley saw a post on Facebook that made her stop in her tracks. On one of the good Samaritan pages she follows, she came across Lainey and her brother, two dogs that were in need of rescuing. The person that made the post had found them around Christmas Eve and couldn’t care for dogs themselves, since they needed some serious care. Thats where Lauren came in.

Lauren has been a foster dog mom ever since she rescued her own dog, Brooks. He was on the list to be euthanized at an overcrowded shelter in Alabama when Lauren took him in and ever since she has opened her home to fostering animals.

The experience has shown her how many dogs are facing a sad life and now she knows that if they just had a little more time to find the right person, there would be a lot more successful adoptions. And that was her logic in taking on Lainey.

“She stunk, she couldn’t see and she bled all over the couch.” said her rescuers. Lainey was going to need some serious care if she was going to recover.

After a trip to the vet it turned out that Lainey was suffering from demodectic mange and secondary skin infections. However, with a lot of love and attention, Lainey would recover and turn into a completely different dog.

Demodetic mange is caused by by s tiny mite that lives on the skin of the dog. They’re always present and usually harmless, unless that dog has a weekend immune system. In that case, they can grow out of control, and unfortunately for Lainey, that was one thing that was causing her to look the way that she did.

If not treated properly, the disease can be deadly. But lucky for this rescue pup, she found a foster home that would take care of her and love her until she found the right family that would love her just the same.

“We had her for four months,” Lauren said. “She took daily vitamins and ivermectin for the full four months. In addition we gave her coconut oil in her food, applied it to her skin, and gave her twice weekly medicated baths. We also did our best to keep her stress level low since demodex thrives on stress.”

After a few months, Lainey started to look like her original self again, almost completely unrecognizable as the dog Lauren had originally brought in. And lucky for Lauren and Lainey, a friend of Lauren’s saw the Lainey’s journey and wanted to adopt her as soon as she could.

“She and her husband are incredible, kindhearted people who were smitten with Lainey from the get-go. We could not have asked for a better home for her.
