This beautiful pit bull is Kevin, and over a year ago he was found abandoned in a field, in extremely poor shape when he was rescued by Paws Across Oswego County (PAOC).

It was clear that Kevin’s life had been a real struggle up until he was rescued and so he was taken to a veterinarian to see exactly what needed to be done.

“Kevin was very thin and lacking most of his fur,” said Marjorie Wentworth, press secretary at PAOC. “His tail had part of it missing and it had healed up but was broken and bent. PAOC picked him up from the vet a few days later and began his healing process with many small meals a day, medicated baths and high-quality foods.”

Kevin has lived happily at the rescue center ever since.

Throughout his time at the shelter, he was able to win over the hearts of all of the staff with his warm, loving and positive personality.

The staff did everything they could to find Kevin a forever home, but visitors were turned off my his skin condition and excitable personality. This made the task of finding him a loving home extremely difficult.

Staff began to notice that Kevin was having issues with his bladder and after a course of bloodwork it was found that Kevin’s kidneys were the culprit.

“After a sonogram it was confirmed that Kevin was in the beginning stages of kidney failure,” Wentworth said. “At that point we decided that we would no longer look for a home for Kevin, and we realized he is home, here with us.”

It was at this point, when staff began to understand how serious Kevin’s medical conditions were that they knew he would remain at the rescue center until his last breath.

As he had grown so close to all of the staff, it was difficult news for everyone to accept. They collectively decided to make his final time with them as special as possible.

One volunteer had the idea to contact Oswego’s mayor and ask him to take Kevin on a fun day out.

The mayor happily accepted and decided that he would visit the center to meet him, and dedicate a brand new fire hydrant to his as well!

Kevin appeared to love every moment of his special day. Dressed in his formal attire he posed for many pictures beside his very own fire hydrant.

“Kevin loves road trips and was very excited to meet all the new people, and very proudly sat, in his suit and tie, to have his pictures taken,” Wentworth said.

The shelter insists that this is just the very beginning of Kevin’s final adventures. He already has much more lined up including personalized doggie treats (fire hydrant cookies with his name and face on the packet!)

While no one can be sure just how much time Kevin has left, everyone at the sanctuary has been involved in ensuring that his remaining days are his best ever.

“Kevin is always happy, he takes each day with so much excitement and love for life and it always shows,” Wentworth said. “We all should be like Kevin and enjoy each day for what it brings.”
