Dolphins may just be everyone’s favorite animal! People love the funny and intelligent creatures that we sometimes mistake for sharks. The relationship between humans and dolphins is an interesting one. They always find ways of capturing the hearts of the people they interact with. It’s no wonder that people will line up for hours just for a chance to “swim with the dolphins” in certain places around the world.
Dolphins have adapted to living with humans.
Many creatures have adapted to humans and changed their regular behavior as a result. An easy example of this is pigeons. These little birds number in the millions in almost every major city because of their ability to scavenger off human scraps!
Dolphins, like pigeons, can eat the scraps that humans throw them.
In certain places, many dolphins hunt a lot less because they simply don’t need to as much. Humans are constantly throwing things in the water for them to eat. They have come to be dependent on humans and even have developed some type of relationship with us.
In Queensland, Australia, one dolphin pod has been missing their human friends.
As one of the smartest creatures in the world, dolphins have absolutely noticed that something has been up recently. They haven’t been seeing humans around the beach as much as they used to! As a result, they also haven’t been fed as much as they are used to.
At Barnacles Cafe & Dolphin Feeding, one pod of dolphins has a plan to bring the humans back.
In Tin Can Bay, north of the Sunshine Coast, there is a restaurant where you can eat and then feed the dolphins. When the coronavirus issue started to become a bit more serious, many restaurants had to close and only do takeout. Barnacles Cafe and Dolphin Feeding was one of those places.
Dolphins would come every day to be fed by humans.
After a few weeks of no people, the dolphins appeared to get worried! As a result, the local pod started bringing special gifts to the shore and placing them on display.
It is possible that the dolphins were missing the humans and were giving us a gift to come back.
While it is impossible to know anything for sure, one Ph.D. student never counts anything out when dealing with dolphins.
“Nothing surprises me with dolphins and their behaviour anymore,” McGovern, a UQ PhD student, told 7NEWS.com.au.
He even went on to talk about some of the aspects of “dolphin culture” most people aren’t aware of.
“They do everything – they use tools, they have culture, they have something similar to names in signature whistles.”
He theorizes that the dolphins are missing the routine of food.
Dolphins play a ton. When they get bored, they play more! Like humans around the world right now, the dolphins seem to be a bit bored. Bringing lumps of coral and bottles may be a way for the dolphins to entertain themselves while humanity is on lockdown.
The dolphins may not “miss us,” but they are missing the food and routine.
Looking at the fact that the dolphins may only be coming for food, we can’t really blame them, can we? Food is often one of the only things that can get a human out of their house. This may just show us that dolphins are even more like humans!
