A unique and heartwarming moment was captured on film for the award-winning IMAX film Dolphins. It was produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films, which also founded the One World One Ocean Campaign.

One World One Ocean is “a multi-platform campaign using the power of film, television and new media to inspire, educate and connect millions of people worldwide in a common purpose: protect and restore the health of the ocean.” And a clip uploaded in 2012 from the short documentary Dolphins certainly struck a chord since the short 21-second scene has been viewed over 5.7 million times since then.

In the short scene, we see two men on a boat with two dogs. As a pair of dolphins swim up alongside the boat, the pups are mighty curious to see what’s coming out of the water and begin wagging their tails.

They aren’t scared at all, in fact, they’re pretty excited. Wouldn’t you be?

It’s likely these canines have some experience on the open ocean as one sticks his paw out to pet the dolphin!

But that’s not all! Perhaps these creatures have met before because they seem to have a lot of trust for one another.

In fact, a few seconds in, the dolphin rises out of the water just enough to give the darker dog a big smooch! He’s encouraged by the man on the boat who points at the dog’s mouth as if to say “give this cutie a kiss,” but it’s still remarkable to see a dolphin in the wild feel so comfortable around a land animal.

Soon after, what appears to be the same dolphin can be seen showing off. He leaps out of the water as if to jump for joy (though that’s probably some creative editing).

Much of what we know about dolphins comes from studying them in captivity, but the film Dolphins tells the story of scientists who do their research in the open ocean and try to understand the animals in their own habitats.

MacGillivray Freeman Films describes their 39-minute motion picture as follows:

“From the dazzling coral reefs of the Bahamas to the wind-swept seas of Patagonia, Dolphins takes audiences on an underwater adventure with inquisitive Atlantic spotted dolphins, acrobatic dusky dolphins, and the familiar bottlenose dolphin. Viewers will meet a young woman scientist, Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski, and her two colleagues, mentor Dr. Bernd Würsig and Dr. Alejandro Acevedo-Gutierrez, as they lead us on an exploration into their fascinating world.”

And it’s a fascinating world indeed!

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen dogs and dolphins get along. There are videos of dogs getting in the water and swimming with their fellow mammals all over YouTube.

And while you can find plenty of dolphin and dog peck pics online, it’s another thing to see it in action and to watch these animals interact so sweetly.

If you’d like to see the short documentary in its entirety, you can rent or stream it on Amazon. And if you needed more encouragement, it’s narrated by Pierce Brosnan with a soundtrack courtesy of Sting!
