The things people do to dogs are truly heartbreaking. Still, incredibly they have the power to love and forgive humans. We could probably all learn a lesson of “letting go” from dogs. Thankfully, there are some good humans out there who go out of their way to help the dogs who need it most.
A few days ago, Officer Angela Laurella got a call that two dogs needed some help. It soon became apparent why.
Officer Laurella received a call that there were two dogs tied to poles at a dead-end street in Pompano, Florida. Nobody knew how long the dogs had been tied up, but it was over 100 degrees out – something needed to be done.
Officer Laurella rushed down to the location she was sent before it was too late.
When she got there, the sight she was greeted with was heartbreaking. She found a scrawny dog tied so tightly to a pole that it wasn’t even able to move. The dog was so thin that you could count its ribs.
“He was absolutely emaciated, dehydrated, with every bone and rib protruding.” – The Dodo
In an incredible act of innocence, the dog lifted his paw and asked for help in the only way he knew how.
The pup was so scared that he didn’t know quite how to react as the officer approached. She took each step slowly, hoping to show that she wasn’t an enemy, but a friend. As she got right next to him, he lifted his paw and put it in her hand – a sign of acceptance.
It was clear from how the dog looked that he didn’t have an easy life.
She named the pup Liam and took him to 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades, a rescue that might be able to help. They were over capacity, but they decided to take him in anyways, without a moment’s hesitation.
Roman, the shelter worker, started personally caring for Liam.
It took lots of visits to the vet to get Liam back to any type of healthy. He was in really rough condition and some wounds take a long time to heal. Soon, Liam was living in Roman’s home as he was cared for and slowly started to get stronger.
“He’s receiving so much love around the clock,” Roman said. “He’s being fed every hour on the hour so his body gets used to it … We have volunteers who are cooking batches of boiled chicken and rice, so he’s loving life right now.”
For a dog that never had good food he was in heaven!
Liam was loved by everyone at the shelter and the goal is to find him a home with someone that will give him all the love he deserves.
“He loves everybody, and there’s not a mean bone in this dog’s body,” Roman said. “To me, that says it all, because after everything he’s endured, he’s still so grateful and forgiving.”
We could all learn a bit from Liam!
