The effects of Hurricane Florence have been disastrous, to say the least, and even weeks after the hurricane made landfall, there’s still plenty of chaos everywhere.

This small and adorable pup has definitely been through a lot, as he was trapped in his home during the storm while the owners already evacuated.

As the water started to rise, a tiny Maltese named Soshe had nowhere to go.

The house started to fill with water and it didn’t take long before the whole place was completely flooded. The water level started to rise higher and higher, and the furniture quickly began to float.

Soshe managed to crawl on top of one of the couches and wandered around in the living room of the house. The pup dangerously floated above the water and had very little room to maneuver, and it’s a miracle that he managed to stay on the couch for so long.

Luckily, Soshe’s owner made a phone call as quickly as possible to let the authorities know that the pup was still trapped inside.

The Humane Society of Missouri dispatched a team specifically to rescue trapped animals.

Soshe was one of those animals that were in need of a rescue. The team already had its hands full with rescues of multiple pets, but larger animals such as cattle and horses were in urgent need of assistance as well.

“Every morning, we received our missions for the day and we were given what possible rescues are out there that we need to go check on,” one of the HSMO’s team members said a reporter from CBS News.

However, the team had difficulties locating Soshe in the first place.

They roughly knew where to look, but the rescue team was unable to locate the home amidst all of the flooding and the chaos.

“The entire neighborhood was underwater, so only the roofs were showing,” team member Chad Gard recalls. “We couldn’t go off the description [of the house] because we could only see the roof.”

Luckily, the water level slowly but surely started to fall again, which made looking for trapped animals a lot easier. After about a week, the team finally found Soshe on their third attempt.

As Murphy’s Law would have it, things didn’t go exactly as planned. Their boat malfunctioned and they were forced to manually paddle, but they finally spotted a house that could fit the description given by Soshe’s owner.

They saw a part of the house number and started to investigate, but they realized they were at exactly the right place when they heard a dog barking.

However, getting the pup out of there didn’t look like it was going to be easy. The front door was difficult to access and locked, but they managed to open it slightly after a couple of tries. Team member Jessica then managed to crawl her way inside and retrieve the poor pup.

“Once we got it open a little bit, Jessica saw the dog sitting on top of the couch that was sitting in the living room,” Chad recalls. “We got the door open far enough so Jessica could get inside.”

After one helpless week on the couch with no one around, this pup was finally free again.

Luckily, Soshe didn’t suffer from any injuries and was in surprisingly decent medical shape. As for Soshe’s owners, they still haven’t returned to their home, but the pup is currently being cared for by a friend of the family.
