Anyone that’s ever fostered the kind of loving connection that comes with owning a dog will understand the great lengths we go to for our animals. For many of us, dogs take on the role of our protectors – whether it’s barking at another dog or growling when unfamiliar faces approach. We do our best to make them feel safe and secure with us, but sometimes we are thrust into situations that are out of our control.
35-year-old Ireneo Santos experienced this first hand when his Loxahatchee home was invaded by armed robbers and his brave dog Jaxson was shot in the face while trying to fend off the intruders.
Mr. Santos was at home with his wife and friend when the masked robbers invaded. The group was trapped in the bedroom with nowhere to go as the intruders began firing several rounds of shots at the door and demanding electronics and cash.
Upon realizing they had nothing to give, his friend was able to pry the gun from one of the assailant’s hand before they fled. When they emerged from the room Mr. Santos found a pool of blood. At first, he feared it was another friend who was also in the house, but soon discovered it was his dog Jaxson’s.
Jaxson was found by the door where he stood trying to protect his owners before he was shot. He was crying loudly and had a horrific gunshot wound to his eye which was bleeding heavily.
“It was really hard to see,” said Mr. Santos.
An anonymous source donated the full cost of Jaxon’s emergency life-saving surgery to the GoFundMe campaign that was created to treat Jaxson and nurse him back to health. Thanks to this donor, Jaxon is still alive.
He is now back home and well on his way to recovering from the family’s terrifying ordeal.
