Social media has the power to turn anyone into a celebrity overnight, and one thing that users seem to love is animals with special or unique physical traits. We recently came across a dog with Mickey Mouse ears, and it turns out we’re not quite done with ear-related stories, because another social media celebrity is hot on his heels.
When a dog was discovered to have his own face on one of his ears, his owners knew that they had to share the pics online, and they instantly became an online sensation. We’ve definitely never seen anything like this before!
It took three years for Floyd the 180 pound Great Dane’s owners to realize that there was something a little special about one of his ears. It wasn’t until Emily’s boyfriend snapped a picture of the pooch on an outing to the park and shared it onto his Facebook that the pair discovered Floyd’s unique markings.
Their Facebook friends quickly picked up on the black-spotted markings around and on top of Floyd’s ear, which looked oddly like a reflection of the own dog’s face.
“We only first noticed Floyd’s ‘ear face’ after my boyfriend Corey used the uncropped version of that picture … as his profile picture on Facebook,” Emily told The Dodo. “One of his friends commented on the ear and then other people noticed it too.”
Floyd’s ear markings created an optical illusion, with some Facebook users being able to instantly see the face that so greatly resembled Floyd, whilst others couldn’t.
The post began to blow up with likes and comments as people shared their reactions to Floyd’s unique markings.
“Once people noticed it on Facebook, a few (including Corey) were genuinely surprised and couldn’t ‘unsee’ the dog face on Floyd’s ear,” Emily said. “Between people who couldn’t see the ear face at all to others who seemed genuinely freaked out by it, the responses were all quite entertaining!”
Fueled by the reaction the pic had received on Facebook, Emily decided to share the photo on Reddit, where it created even more of a stir between those who could and couldn’t see the illusion. The picture also inspired some punny comments, with one user writing, “That’s just earie,” and another quipping, “Dog has a dopplegangear.”
Someone even created a side-by-side to help people who were struggling to see the illusion.
Emily believes that the reason why it took three years for the couple to spot Floyd’s unique markings is because the pup has to be in a pretty specific position for the illusion to be seen.
“His ear has to be at just the right angle and position to clearly see the fold that makes up the ‘eye,’” Emily said. “For that reason, it’s not easy to see in person because of movement. That one photo just really captured it perfectly.”
Despite now being an online celebrity, Floyd hasn’t let the fame get to his head, and still enjoys hanging out with Emily more than anything else.
“Floyd is an absolute sweetheart,” Emily said. “He is my faithful companion, and loves our frequent trips in the car together.”
This wasn’t the first time a photo of Floyd went viral.
A photo of Floyd’s giant paw also made the rounds on Reddit when the Great Dane was a puppy. People were amazed by how big his paw was!
