When we look at our cuddly, friendly dog’s faces, it’s easy to forget that dogs were originally used and bred as tools! The incredible history of dogs is diverse and fun to learn about, too.
Most of the breeds that we know and love today originated from a specific region of the world that needed a specific dog!
Dogs were the “specialty workers” of the past.
The dog breeds that we currently know today were originally used for special reasons! From tiny wiener dogs to massive Mastiffs, every dog had a purpose and utility to it. Despite their use as tools, many people still loved their pets, just like we do!
Ever been mad at your dog for barking?
Dogs LOVE to bark. Most of them do, at least. We often don’t like it, especially when it’s late at night and they just hear the cars outside. Funny enough, this was something REALLY good for a long time!
One of the most important things a dog used to do was protect the house (and the people inside it).
Guard dogs were essential for most households! Sometimes they protected the people, but most times, they protected the animals that a household owned. Enter ALL shepherding breeds, ever.
Dogs breeds that have the word “shepherd” in their names protected animals (as well as a lot of breeds without that in their name).
Great Pyrenees, Sheepdogs, and other examples were all bred to protect their owner’s animals! When they sense a threat, they barked to scare it off. Now, most people want these breeds as pets, not as sheep guardians.
Occasionally, these dogs still get to fulfill their original purpose!
While most English Mastiffs are couch potatoes today (and not to kill gladiators like they were originally used for), different breeds still get a chance to live the good old days.
In one video, we see a dog protect a flock of chickens about to be pillaged.
One of the most conniving animals in the world is the fox! They are known for their sneaky and smart tricks. Some of their favorite foods just so happen to coincide with what humans like – chicken. In this video, we see a dog that stops a hungry fox from having his way!
In Poland, one family has a chicken coop that had caught the eye of a fox.
Even more, the entire thing is on video surveillance! We see the fox sneak in the fence and make it’s way to the chicken coop with a gleam in its eye. Thankfully, there is a dog nearby that hasn’t forgotten his ancient roots!
When the dog notices a fox is sneaking around his land, the jumps to action!
Just like he was bred to do, the dog takes off and protects his owner’s property, animals, and his own pride! When the fox realizes that his chance at an easy meal is gone, he takes off the way he came!
If it weren’t for the dog, chicken dinner wouldn’t be on the menu that night for the humans!
While dogs occupy a different role for us today, videos like this are a funny and interesting reminder that they are incredible animals that all have special gifts and talents, even if they are mostly used to cuddle nowadays.
