The brutally cold weather in Russia is not for the faint-hearted, so when a dog found itself trapped in a frozen lake, local road workers could not just stand by and let him freeze to death.

Chernish the dog faced a battle for survival in the freezing pond in the Pskov Oblast region of Russia, but his rescuers were there in a flash.

Two of the men managed to reach the terrified dog after they found a boat on the edge of the water. Braving the cold, they cracked the ice using a metal pole and an oar to make their way towards him.

As they gradually moved towards Chernish, they shouted out in reassurance, “We’re almost there. Hold on!”

Chernish was paddling for his life straight to them, fighting the icy waters.

Finally, when they reached him, they pulled the frozen dog aboard and one of the rescuers gave the shocked dog a relieved hug.

After that horrible ordeal, Chernish’s life is looking up!

A local woman called Natalia has decided to adopt him. She said Chernish is loving life, and no doubt the warmth in his new home. He loves car rides and according to her, he’s the best-behaved patient at the local veterinary clinic.

She said, “Chernish now has his own two-room kennel. I want people to know that this dog who was rescued by a pair of brave men now has a warm house to live in and a hot meal to eat.”
