For Deputy Michael Gregorek of Douglas County, Colorado, January 22 turned out to be a lifesaving rescue kind of day.

However, it wasn’t a person that Deputy Gregorek was going to save, it was a dog.

A dog named Hank.

The day started out just like any other for the deputy. He was going about his normal routine when a call came in over his radio reporting a car fire.

Deputy Gregorek took the call.

He raced towards the location of the burning vehicle. When he arrived, the owner of the vehicle was frantically calling over to the deputy that his dog was still in the car.

When Gregorek heard this, he remained calm and shifted his focus towards getting that dog out of the vehicle.

It was a smash and grab.

He walked up the car, pulled out a rod, and shattered the side window of the vehicle.

Smoke was swirling out of the windows in thick, black columns. The deputy had trouble seeing into the vehicle and asked the owner where the dog was.

The owner wasn’t sure so the deputy tried taking a look inside. However, the heat and smoke prevented him from getting a good look and he couldn’t locate the dog.

He went around to the back of the vehicle and shattered the rear window.

Thankfully, Hank was waiting.

This time, luckily, he was able to see the dog. The owner jumped in and tried to pull the dog out of the window.

He was able to grab the dog by its neck and when he pulled his head out of the window, the dog was still conscious and breathing.

However, Hank looked like he may have inhaled quite a bit of smoke as his mouth was covered in drool and he seemed to be a bit confused.

It was time to get him out.

The owner tried to pick up the dog and pull it out of the vehicle but was unable to do so. He let go of the dog and stepped aside to catch his breath and cough out some smoke.

That’s when Deputy Gregorek jumped in.

He reached into the vehicle and grabbed a hold of the helpless dog.

After pulling him out of the vehicle, the deputy carried Hank in his arms away from the smoke and flames before dropping him into a patch of snow on the side of the street.

Hank was so grateful to the deputy for saving his life that he showed his appreciation the only that he knew how…

Lot’s of slobbery dog kisses.
