An 8-month-old baby named Vivianna was trapped inside her family’s Baltimore, Maryland home when it was suddenly engulfed in flames. Their dog, Polo, was inside as well. Vivianna’s mother, Erika Poremski, says she stepped outside for just a moment when suddenly she saw flames.

“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her. I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”

When the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived, both the first and second stories of the home were engulfed in flames.

Despite the danger, Poremski told the firefighters her daughter and her dog were still both trapped inside of the house; they immediately rushed into the burning home without a second thought. What they found inside broke their hearts but gave them a huge sense of relief at the same time.

The firefighters found Polo lying on top of Vivianna’s body — she was alive.

The 6-year-old dog, Polo, covered the baby’s body with his own in order to protect her from the smoke and heat. Sacrificing his own life, he saved Vivianna’s.

“She only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door. He was my first baby and now I lost him,” Poremski said through tears. “And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it.”

Vivianna was placed in a medically induced coma while they treated the burns on the one side of her body. Poremski will forever grieve the loss of their beloved fur baby that saved her daughter’s life. The beautiful baby is getting better every day but still has a long road to recovery.

If you’d like to help with Vivianna’s medical funds and help them with rebuilding a new home and belongings, you can do so through their GoFundMe page.
