The adorable German Shepherd Luna went missing at sea, and nobody could find her for over five weeks. The pup was presumed dead and her owner was absolutely devastated. She fell right off a fishing boat in Southern California waters. Luckily, the Navy was able to find the pup and rescue her as if a miracle had happened.

Luna’s owner Nick Haworth is a professional fisherman and was in utter shock and disbelief when he received a phone call from the Navy saying that they’d rescued Luna. She is an adorable German Shepherd and is a bit over one year old.

The two reunited with a warm and very heartfelt hug. Luna’s tail was noticeable waggling and she jumped right into Nick’s arms.

News station NBC 7 interviewed the owner after the two reunited.

“She still smells like fish,” he said. “I can’t believe this dog is alive. I never thought I’d see her again. I’m just glad to have her home.”

Nick still doesn’t know exactly what happened on the day of Luna’s disappearance. He remembers getting some fish traps along with his crew, and Luna suddenly went missing.

“That was a rough day,” he remembered. “It was about 3 a.m. I was looking around and I couldn’t find the dog. I just couldn’t find the dog. I started freaking out, honestly.”

The man did everything he could to try and find Luna. He contacted officials at the Naval Auxiliary Landing Field of San Clemente Island to notify them that his dog had fallen overboard, and he was hoping that Luna would be able to swim to shore safely.

The man believes that something in the water must have gotten Luna’s attention somehow. He spent the next two days at sea looking for his beloved pup, and the Navy at San Clemente Island were frantically searching for the lost German Shepherd as well.

“We went on a full-fledged search with spotlights and everything. It was so dark. We couldn’t find her by the time the light came up. I thought she had already drowned — or made it to the island,” Nick said.

One week passed when Luna was presumed dead.

“I gave up,” he said. “I went through a lot of time where I was so sad about losing my dog. She’s behind me all the time — every minute we’re on the boat.”

“[I had] to make sure she wasn’t there, waiting on me,” he added. “I was heartbroken. I didn’t know whether she was alive or dead, what to think. It was really devastating to go from having this dog next to me every minute of my life to, all of a sudden, she’s gone in a flash.”

He never forgot about Luna and always brought his binoculars every time he was in the area just to take a quick glance at the water.

Four weeks later, a staff member of the Navy spotted Luna on the road. It turns out that Nick was right – Luna did indeed make it to land by herself.

Though the pup was severely malnourished, she was otherwise healthy. Then the Navy made a phone call that Nick never thought he would receive.

“I was in awe — pure disbelief at first,” he said. “Then I had to see a picture of her. I was like, ‘I have to make sure [it’s my dog]. When I saw [that it was Luna], I was overwhelmed with joy. Probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

“I’m not a guy of many emotions but, man, this had me stirred up. This had me in tears. It’s a beautiful thing to get my dog back,” he said.

Officials then Luna flew over to Nick for an incredibly heartwarming reunion.

“To have my best friend back is really nice,” Nick said.
