We simply don’t know what to make of people who abandon their pets.
The Dog Rescue Shelter in Mladenovac, Serbia posted a video in May 2020 showing a sweet dog on the side of the road who had just given birth to two tiny puppies.
The 7+ minute clip has already been viewed over 7.5 million times in a little over a month.
The new mama is nursing her puppies all alone and presumably waiting for her owner to return. While we don’t know what other proof there is that she was someone’s pet, she is extremely docile and trusting of those who come to rescue her.
However, earlier she has snarled at someone who tried to approach her with food and water – probably because she was guarding her puppies.
Once an older gentleman sees her on the side of the road, he calls the local shelter for help and they come to the scene.
He’s kind enough to wait for help and lead the rescue workers directly to the dogs.
With gloved hands, a rescuer approaches the dog, who seems willing to let them pet her.
Perhaps she realized she was in good hands or needed help at that point.
Some people just have a way with animals.
The dog even seems pleased to let the stranger stroke her puppies as well.
She’s clearly not afraid of all humans!
The rescuers scoop mom and her pups and load them into their van to go to the no-kill shelter.
Just to be safe, the rescuers check the bushes to make sure there are no other babies.
That’s when they find a third puppy that had squirmed away!
They reunited the days-old puppies with mama and continued to search for more before realizing there were just three – two females and one male.
Soon everyone was on their way to a better life at the shelter.
Hopefully, once the puppies are weaned, everyone can find their forever homes.
The shelter has named the mom Moli and she appears to be doing well these days – even making a new kitty friend!
The rescue reports that Moli has been a wonderful mom to her puppies.
The stray and abandoned dog population in Serbia has been hard to control for animal advocates.
The country doesn’t have a strong record with animal rights and years of war made people immune to the plight of street animals as they dealt with their own hunger and housing issues.
But horrifying stories of abuse have emerged as well, leading many to believe that a larger campaign of animal appreciation needs to take place.
In the meantime, the country’s unwanted dogs and cats are being cared for in a handful of shelters by people with big hearts but limited funds.
Fortunately, Moli and her puppies are currently in a loving foster home until they regain strength and the puppies are weaned. She’s one of the lucky ones.
According to their Instagram page, the shelter is currently caring for 350 dogs and 20 cats and rely solely on the funding of volunteers. If you’d like to help out, visit www.dogrescueshelter.org/donate.
