The Westminster Dog Show is one of the prestigious dog shows in the world. The pups who compete in this show train for months, and the majority of them are the best-of-the-best.
And then there’s Winky.
Winky is an adorable Bichon Frise who knew that she was supposed to go as fast as she could through the agility course, but she chose to ignore that rule. Winky is more of a style-over-substance type of competitor.
In February 2019, Winky made headlines with her slow run through the agility course at the 143rd Westminster Dog Show.
From the very beginning of the course, Winky refused to run—she decided she was going through the course at her own pace, and nothing was going to stop her. The pup sauntered through the agility course like she was going for a walk in the park. The crowd absolutely loved her—everyone was shouting ‘Go Winky!’
Winky seemed to realize that she had become a fan-favorite. When she got to the top of a ramp, she stopped to pose for the adoring crowd. They cheered even louder.
Winky continued going through the course at her own pace, casually hopping over hurdles and sauntering through the tunnels.
When she got to the see-saw, she stopped and let herself slowly fall to the ground. Then, when she reached the top of the next ramp, she paused and posed for the crowd again! By that point, her trainer was simply laughing—she seemed to realize that Winky was going at her own pace no matter what she did.
Westminster Dog Show shared a video of Winky’s slow run on Twitter, and it quickly went viral. Everyone enjoyed watching Winky meander through the course.
The fastest dog in Winky’s class finished the agility course in 39.31 seconds. Winky finished it in…100.01 seconds, and she had 92 errors. But Winky won something even more important: the love and adoration of the internet! Everyone loved the way Winky worked the crowd.
Many other people also said that they loved Winky’s energy, and they wanted to learn something from her.
Westminster Dog Show also shared a video of the dog who won in Winky’s class, Gabby the Papillion. It’s easy to see why this dog won—just look at how fast she goes around the weave poles!
