There are some people who lose their dogs and never find them.
This one family found out that their lost dog was at a shelter, but never picked that dog up.
Animal control officers got a call about a stray dog and picked up a 6-year-old pit bull mix named Lindsy.
Lindsy was taken to the Babylon Animal Shelter in Long Island, New York.
She was only there a few weeks when one of her family members called the shelter.
It was a child who said that Lindsy was her dog and that she had gone missing.
“The child said she would have to ask her father if they could get her,” Kristin Siarkowicz, an animal control officer at Babylon Animal Shelter, told The Dodo.
Sadly, the child’s dad must have said no because the family never came to pick up Lindsy. But this didn’t worry anyone at the shelter.
They were confident that they could find a home for Lindsy since she has such a good personality.
“She is sweet, kind and laid-back,” Lyndsey Grosjean, a volunteer at Babylon Animal Shelter, told The Dodo. “She loves to play fetch and rip apart toys. She loves walks and treats and just being with her people.”
Their well wishes for Lindsy, however, didn’t come to fruition.
Lindsy has been at the shelter for two whole years.
Grosjean believes that 8-year-old Lindsy’s size may be a factor.
“She is not a cute little puppy,” Grosjean said. “The older, larger ones just don’t get the attention they deserve from the public. Plus, now that she’s been there for so long, people think there is something wrong with her when there is not. The long-timers get a stigma about them.”
But Lindsy doesn’t seem to mind being in the shelter. Grosjean said she doesn’t seem stressed and there are lots of people who take care of her there.
She kinds of just blends in at the shelter at this point.
“Lindsy never has bad days,” Siarkowicz said. “She is always tail wagging and ready for attention.”
But still, the staff says they want to see Lindsy find a forever home.
“This girl deserves a home so much,” Grosjean said. “She is now a senior and needs to find her people. It is heartbreaking seeing these dogs sit and wait and get old with us. It’s not fair and it’s not their fault they are here. She is a wonderful, happy girl and there is no reason why she has waited so long. All she needs is a chance.”
