Dogs are amazing animals.
They offer us companionship, love, and endless amounts of joy.
However, they are capable of so much more than that.
For example, Honey, a hunting dog from Lousiana, has been helping her owner Douglas Downs track down deer for the past three years.
She has gained quite a reputation for herself in the hunting world, sniffing out over 30 deer in the last three seasons.
However, when her owner received a call letting him know that a young boy went missing, Honey was tasked with her greatest challenge yet: finding a lost boy.
The boy’s name is Eli Alcock and he was just 3-years-old at the time that he went missing.
He had been playing in the backyard of his friend’s house when he disappeared.
His mother, Lindsy Alcock, was there at the house that day and recalls how her little boy went missing.
She told reporters from the Louisiana Sportsman that Eli, his older brother, and another boy were playing together in the backyard.
She went inside to do a couple of things and then went back out to check on the kids.
“I came back outside to check on the kids. I asked the two older ones, ‘Where’s Eli?’ They said, ‘I don’t know.’ So I said, ‘OK, he’s over here in the sand pile or over here in the mud hole.’ He has places where he’ll go off if he’s not with them.”
Alcock continued:
“We looked in the normal places and he wasn’t there, and that’s when we kind of started freaking out because if he’s not there, you know he’s wandered off somewhere.”
After calling the sheriff’s department and posting on Facebook, dozens of community members gathered to help look for little Eli.
That’s when Downs received a call asking if Honey could help find the missing boy.
“He asked me if I thought Honey would do anything. I said, ‘Man, I don’t really know. I’ve never done anything like that with her,’ Downs said. “If it was a deer, or he was wearing a deer hide going through the woods, I’d say no problem, no doubt.”
However, Downs knew what he and Honey had to do.
“‘Dude, all I can do is try.'”
The two of them set off to try and find Eli.
They went by the house that Eli had disappeared from and someone handed Downs a jacket that belonged to Eli.
Honey took a few big sniffs and then started tracking the boy.
The pair wandered around the woods for a while before cresting a big hill.
Down at the bottom, stuck in the mud, was Eli.
“We both hit the mud hole at the same time,” Downs said. “I scooped up the little boy, and Honey was just running circles around us. Then we all just started screaming and hollering, ‘We got him! We got him!'”
Thanks to Honey and her impressive nose, Eli was found safe and sound.
