A Good Guard Dog is Always a Family’s Best Friend but…
When most families look for a good guard dog, they want one that can be relied upon to protect what matters. Most of the time, you expect these dogs to guard children or property, but Jakey, the cute rottweiler, has a different job in mind.
As it turns out, whenever Jakey’s family isn’t home, she rushes to gather up all the bread she can.
She then hides the bread around the home, making sure it’s out of sight so that bread thieves can’t get it.
What’s the deal with Jakey and bread?
When Katrina Frank, Jakey’s mom, posted Jakey videos on Instagram, people wanted to know more about Jakey. Besides all the doggy questions you expect, one of the most common was about why Jakey is so protective over bread.
Katrina told The Dodo:
“She started this four years ago when we moved to our farm… Every time we would leave she would hide the bread.”
There was just something about baked goods that Jakey had a nose for.
It doesn’t even take long for Jakey to hop into action. Once the family leaves out the door, Jakey sniffs out the baked goods and grabs them. Even containers that keep the smells inside aren’t safe as Jakey knows the smell of plastic wraps and casing.
Katrina remembers that:
“We have a bread box so she likes to hop up and pull it out of there. If I leave it in the pantry instead, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I’ve put it in the refrigerator before and she has opened the door to get to it.”
The lesson to learn is clear as day. No bread will escape this dog’s determined nose.
But there’s one thing that makes Jakey an incredible bread guardian.

Jakey never takes a bite and is careful to not crumble or crack anything – she just takes and hides the bread. This means that this clever dog is really trying to guard something important, rather than hiding her lunch.

“I assume she thinks it’s the most important thing to us because we use it so often.”

It’s such a cute little quirk of this funny dog.
Katrina even posted a video of Jakey protecting an individual danish (along with the bread).
In a Facebook post, she hilariously wrote:
“We joke that if someone broke in, she would be like “IT’S OKAY, SHOOT MY MOM, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TOUCH THE BREAD!!!!”

When the family comes home, this dog is very careful to lead the family to each and every piece. Bagged loaves, baked goods, even the moldy bread for bird feeding. Jakey leads their family to every item.
It’s just a sweet little note that this dog makes sure that its family never goes without. What a good girl!
