Some coworkers at an office building in Kennesaw, Georgie, have had their eyes on a cute dog that was constantly living and hanging around a small forest area close to their working space. The workers quickly gave the four-legged pup the name Shelby and they wanted to do their best to look after her, by leaving her things to eat and toys to play with.
The founder of Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue Jason Flatt had the opportunity to talk with The Dodo about Shelby, as he recalls the worker’s efforts of getting to know the dog better.
“They put up a tarp in the woods,” he said. “They put signs up. They spoke with the management of the property about her.”
For a long period of over two years, the dog didn’t want to leave her natural habitat of the small forest area. It has been speculated that Shelby was abandoned by her previous owners after they moved away from the area.
Regularly, Shelby made herself visible to the public and was sitting lonely on the grass, looking for companionship. Unfortunately, over two years had passed and her previous owners never came back.
At that point, one of the workers in the office building was concerned about the dog’s health, so Jason Flatt of the rescue organization was brought up to the scene. It took a while before Jason was able to take on this case, as Shelby’s condition wasn’t as urgent as other dogs who needed help under more dire circumstances.
However, it quickly became an urgent matter when the office workers received word that the forest and the dog’s natural habitat would soon be demolished in favor of construction.
Jason tried everything he could to save Shelby, and he succeeded.
Because the workers had regularly left her bits of food, Shelby already had a type of routine. Jason used this to his advantage and used a food bowl as a lure to trap Shelby into a cage, where she could be transported to a safer place.
“I came back in the pouring rain,” the man recalls. “I got out of my van and I heard whining and howling. There she was in the trap.”
Remarkably, Shelby’s reintegration has gone extremely well. In fact, the dog that had been homeless for over two years only needed three days to get used to being around humans again.
“On the first day, she was nervous, but I could pet her,” Jason said. “By the third day, she was jumping up and down.”
After two years of not receiving the care and love she deserved, she finally opened up again and truly flourished. A veterinarian checked her out shortly after she was rescued, and discovered heartworm – although that could luckily be treated.
Now that Shelby has fully recovered, she has been put up for adoption hoping to find her forever loving home.
