When Jeremy Henson and Sarah Henson went to Las Vegas in February for a week-long vacation, they left Dexter at home.

Their beloved pooch is a five-year-old dog with impeccable intelligence.

Before their much-awaited trip, they made sure to book Dexter at a local doggy daycare near Lenexa, Kansas.

Dexter was supposed to be there for five days, however, things didn’t go well as planned.

On his third day of stay in the daycare, he started to feel homesick and he was itching to go back home.

Shockingly, he broke out of his kennel and ran all the way home! For the record, their home wasn’t just 1, 2, or a couple of blocks away.

It’s whopping two miles away from the daycare!

He started hammering the doorbell with his little paws as soon as he arrived home.

The clueless dog had no idea that his mom and dad weren’t home.

Fortunately, they had a ring doorbell installed at their front door. Dexter’s perseverance worked out and the security feature of their doorbell sent Jeremy’s phone a notification.

It alerted him and saw who was trying to “break in” into their house.

Following the incident, Jeremy posted the story on his Facebook account and wrote, “So, we’re in Zion National Park/Vegas this week & Dexter is staying at a local doggy day care. Imagine our surprise when he rang our ring doorbell!”

But how did Dexter manage to remember his way home?

On the same social media post, Jeremy mentioned that he had been walking Dexter regularly around their area. It’s believed to be the reason why he was able to trace his way back home.

They weren’t expecting anyone that week that’s why seeing Dexter at their front door didn’t surprise them at all.

The couple was actually more worried about something else.

“It didn’t surprise me that he was on our front steps. I was just concerned that they didn’t know, so I called them. I was like — my dog’s on your front porch, but I think he’s supposed to be there,” Jeremy Henson told FOX4.

Jeremy immediately called the daycare and told them the situation. The animal carers in the facility believed that Dexter jumped over a 6-foot fence and ran all the way home right after.

“He has been kenneled in the past, and hasn’t had too many issues. His older little brother is no longer with us anymore. I think he used to be fine hanging out there with him,” Jeremy said.

Dexter’s safety was all thanks to the ring doorbell’s security feature.

Their ring doorbell’s security camera has a two-way talk feature. They were able to calm Dexter down before a nearby friend of theirs was able to drop by to pick him up.

Jeremy and Sarah were both thankful that they received the notification just in the nick of time.

A snowstorm was approaching that week and things could’ve been worse for their homesick dog.

It was clear that Dexter didn’t know mom and dad were not home. We can’t blame him for being there, he was just simply missing his parents because he hadn’t seen them for days.

Or perhaps, he was just taking his day job very seriously.

“We adopted Dexter to be a watchdog for my wife while I traveled, and he takes that job VERY seriously, so that’s probably why he was so determined to come home,” Jeremy said.

No blame game was done because of the incident and Jeremy believed the daycare did its best in taking care of Dexter. It’s just that, the pooch was just so persistent to see his parents.

Dogs are clever, and this trait could bring them either a ton of treats or oftentimes – trouble.
