Łukasz Muniowski and his lovely wife Natalia from Poland were just simply riding around with their bikes in a countryside area, but couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw an adorable pup’s head popping up on the side of the road. The dog had created its own shelter in a drain that seemed a bit loose and anything but structurally stable.

“My wife said, ‘Oh, a dog,’” Łukasz told The Dodo. “And we stopped.”

As soon as the couple approached the dog, it retreated into the home he had gotten used to, the drain.

“Her run … was very awkward,” Łukasz recalls. “Her back was in the air, the back legs were wobbly and didn’t touch the ground. It’s really strange to describe because I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Without hesitation, the two abandoned their plans to continue their route.

They put their bikes aside and did everything they could to help the little pup who clearly was in need of help.

“One side of the place that she ran into was closed with a big stone,” he said. “I started to dig with my hands under it… while Natalia watched if the dog would leave on the other side. Bobby started to growl, but it wasn’t a scary growl. When I was finally able to move the stone and put my hand slowly in there… she smelled it and then put her paws on my hand.”

Putting her paws on the man’s hand was definitely a signal of trust, and things could escalate from there. The man grabbed the dog and kept her close, giving her some well-deserved love. Łukasz and Natalia then hopped on their bikes to find the nearest vet.

It was very noticeable that the dog – which has been named ‘Bobby’ by Łukasz and his wife – couldn’t walk. He describes one of her paws as “hanging… from a single thread.”

It turns out that Bobby was indeed severely injured. She couldn’t use both of her back feet simply because they were broken. The vet estimated that the injuries occurred around three or four weeks before they found them, and could be a result of a car accident or a hunting trap.

“He suggested that we put her down, because there’s no point in making this dog suffer if we don’t find her a home first,” Łukasz recalls. “That was when we made the decision that we’ll take her. We just looked at each other and we knew that we want to have this puppy.”

The vet wasn’t comfortable operating on Bobby because of her broken legs, as it increases the risk of something going awry. When the couple got back home in Warsaw, they found a veterinarian who was willing to do the surgery. Unfortunately, the vet had to amputate one of the dog’s legs, but the other leg was mended. Bobby now uses a brace which would help her walk.

Despite the surgery and the brace, the couple didn’t get their hopes up much as they believed she’d never walk again. Bobby’s fighting spirit proved them wrong.

“I remember that she used to run in her sleep and we were saddened by that, because we thought she would never run again,” the man said. “Until one night, during a short walk, she was tugging on her leash, so we decided to run and she ran with us! She was so happy.”

“She lives with us now in an apartment on the third floor, with no elevator,” he adds. “She takes the stairs all by herself, except when she’s very tired.”

Bobby can do everything another dog can do as well and loves playing around with Leon, another dog that Łukasz rescued.

Playing fetch, exploring her surroundings, giving cuddles and licks – Bobby can do it all thanks to the heartwarming love she received from Łukasz and Natalie.

“She’s very loving and kind,” he said. “She loves when we fall asleep together. She sometimes hugs us with her paws and rests her head on our knees and lays like that for hours.”
