Although it’s always good to adopt shelter dogs rather than buy from puppy mills, these animals sometimes come with adjustment challenges.
Because many shelter dogs are simply dropped off without explanation, some of them come from extreme backgrounds of abuse and neglect. As a result, they can sometimes be uncomfortable around humans or afraid of their surroundings. These dogs generally take more love and patience to help them adapt to the world.
Fortunately, the family in this story found a quick solution to their problem.
When Elizabeth Spence adopted rescue dog Nora, the animal was very skittish at first.
Although the Spence home was full of other rescue animals—five, to be exact—and three children as well, Nora seemed to want nothing to do with the chaos of the household. Regardless, they still wanted to give Nora a home. Everything changed one day, however,when Nora bonded with Spence’s 11-month-old son, Archie.
Because Archie is such a peaceful baby, he makes a great foil to Nora’s anxious personality.
As the two got to know each other they soon became inseparable. Whenever Archie would have to take a bath, Nora would be nearby. They would cuddle together and take naps together. Needless to say, Nora knew she had to get as much of their relationship on camera as possible.
Sometimes, the two would play in Archie’s play area together.
After a long hard day in the house, they might cuddle up together on a blanket with some toys.
If there are no toys around, Archie and Nora sometimes even spoon one another!
They even wear matching outfits.
Although Nora’s story may seem tragic on the surface, this is another example of how love can conquer all things.
Although raising Nora presented a unique challenge for Spence and her family, she knew that Nora had a good heart and just needed the right conditions to make a turnaround. Although they weren’t sure what they would need to do to make Nora feel comfortable, it turned out that they actually had to do very little. Nora was healed the most by little baby Archie’s unconditional love and innocence.
After seeing the pictures that Spence took of these two, who wouldn’t be moved to a more peaceful place?
