Rescue pit bull sits in shelter for over 2 years, waiting for someone to take a chance on him
Droolz lived at a remote Colorado animal shelter for 729 days without finding a home, even though he had no health or behavioral issues to speak of.

Meet Droolz, the adorable pit bull/boxer mix:

This poor pup waited in a shelter for 2 whole years before FINALLY being adopted in October of 2020. And that’s not the kind of record he should be setting.

Rehoming is hard

Rehoming dogs can be a challenge, and despite Droolz being one adorable pup, he was constantly overlooked at his shelter in favor of other dogs.

He didn’t have any behavioral issues, the 4-year-old affectionate little guy just needed to be an only dog.

When Kacey Widetich, the Founder and Executive director of the Relay for Rescue organization found out about Droolz, she wanted to do something to comfort the dog AND help him get adopted.

So she moved in with him at the shelter on October 22nd and started a social media campaign showing just how great of a roommate Droolz would be.

That’s one heck of an effort!

#adoptdrools

In case you were wondering, there’s some debate about how the pup’s name is spelled, but that hardly matters. We’re going with Droolz even though the hashtag Widetch used on her Facebook page was “#adoptdrools”

One of the reasons Droolz was having a hard time getting adopted is because the shelter he lived in was in a remote part of southern Colorado.

“Not a lot of exposure because of [the shelter’s] location,” Widetich said. “And because we’re kind of particular about what kind of forever home he goes to. He does need to go to a home where he’ll be the only pet, no other dogs or cats.”

It just didn’t get the foot traffic it needed to find him a new home.

“These remote shelters are so understaffed and just don’t have the capacity to adequately market all these sweet pups. If my spending the night in the shelter for a few nights helps even one dog get adopted, I will have done my job. But I’m not stopping at just one — they ALL deserve a second chance at happily ever after.”

Widetich’s sleepover lasted 12 days until someone finally decided they had to have the sweet doggo – and they were willing to drive for hours to come to get him.

Going home

Finally, after 729 days in a shelter, Droolz found his new dad.

The staff at the facility were thrilled that Widetich’s plan worked and Droolz’s two-year stay was finally over. The sweet pup would finally get the forever home he so richly deserved.

Of course, there were lots of tears at the shelter as everyone bid their familiar friend goodbye. But they were happy tears.

Not only did the stunt find Droolz a home, but in the meantime, it drew enough attention to the shelter to get other animals adopted as well!

“This has been an experience of a lifetime,” Widetich said. “Not only did we find Drools his forever home, but we also found forever homes for three other dogs in the meantime.”

Droolz now goes by Monte and enjoys a big back yard to run around in with his loving forever person!

And remember that if you can’t find the perfect pet at your local shelter, it may be worth investigating options at more remote locations!
