On Jan. 2, 2015, a dog was found tied to a rail at the Ayr train station in Scotland. Beside him was a suitcase with a pillow, food, and a bowl of water. The dog was obviously abandoned, and nobody knew who had done it or what to do with him.

Investigators tried to find out where the dog came from.

They scanned him for a microchip and thought they were onto something. Unfortunately, that lead didn’t work out for them.

Inspector Stewart Taylor explained:

“The dog is microchipped and we were able to find out his name is Kai. We contacted the owner registered to the microchip, who stated they had sold Kai on Gumtree in 2013. Unfortunately, they could not tell us the address of the person who bought him.”

They realized that the dog, who was named Kai, could have switched hands numerous times since then, and they decided it was best to just focus on finding a new home for him.

They still planned to search for the person who abandoned the dog, though. Taylor said:

“Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible. If anyone can help we would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible.”

The investigators asked the public for help. They hoped someone would have seen Kai with an owner or maybe even knew who dropped him off at the train station. They released a statement saying:

“Kai is around two to three years old and is a lovely dog with a nice nature. We will look after him until we can find him a permanent and loving home.”

Finally, they were able to track down the woman who left the dog at the station.

She claimed that she was tricked into believing that the dog was a different breed. She didn’t want to care for him any longer, so she left him at the station, where she assumed someone would find him and give him a home.

While the authorities dealt with her, Kai’s story had been making headlines.

Everyone was worried about this dog and felt bad that he had been abandoned. The SPCA was contacted by people all over the world, including the Philippines and the United States. Dozens of people wanted to adopt this pup.

Kai needed surgery before he could be adopted.

His eyelids were flipped up, and the issue needed to be corrected. The SPCA asked for donations to help with the surgery and was blown away by the response. It received double the amount requested in just a day.

After Kai recovered from surgery, the SPCA chose his new owner. A man named Ian was interested in the dog. He had just lost his beloved Dalmatian and was ready to open his heart to a new pet.

The staff felt that he could provide a great home for the dog.

The SPCA explained:

“One of the reasons we chose Ian was right from the start he said he was interested in rehoming Kai, but he would take our advice if we thought one of the many other dogs in our care would suit him better. It was really important for us to select an owner who wanted Kai for all the right reasons and had really thought through their decision to take on a rescue dog.”

Ian is thankful to have been picked to be Kai’s new owner. He and Kai are best friends and go everywhere together.

They have both helped each other heal, as well.

Ian explained:

“He comes to work with me every day and has a wee face he pulls if he thinks I’m going out without him. Kai is such a gentle dog and is great with everyone, including children. When we’re in the park he usually ends up getting chased by much smaller dogs, though, as he’s just so placid!”

It’s hard to imagine how anyone could abandon such a sweet dog, but it all worked out for the best. Kai is better off with Ian, who gives him plenty of love and attention, than with an owner who didn’t want him just because he wasn’t the right breed. Hopefully, he and Ian can make many memories together.
