Even though he had been abandoned by his family, Boo kept hope that one day they would return.
They moved to a new home and left behind a mattress some other discarded objects on the sidewalk along with their dog, Boo.
The poor dog stayed on that mattress just waiting for their return. According to Michigan Live, neighbors said he had been on his own for about a month.
“He was just laying there, being his loyal self,” Mike Diesel of Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue told The Dodo. “Pillows were still on the mattress. Being the loyal dog he was supposed to be, he waited for his master to come back.”
Neighbors even said that the family returned to get a few belongings but left their dog behind again. They apparently couldn’t be bothered to drop him off at a local shelter.
Thankfully, Boo’s neighbors were kind enough to feed him.
Dustin Oliver, who is also a founder at Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue, spotted a photo of the pit bull on Facebook and it broke his heart.
“That original picture of him lying on the mattress just pulls at your heartstrings,” he told Michigan Live.
The folks at Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue wanted to take Boo in but first, they had to gain his trust so they stayed with him on his mattress until the wee hours of the morning to get to know him.
“Through that day, it was just a lot of trust building and conversation between me and Boo,” Oliver said.
He bought Boo some McDonald’s which he voraciously ate up.
Finally, Boo allowed him to put a collar on his neck and escort him into his truck.
They went straight to the veterinarian where it was discovered that Boo had heartworm and needed treatment.
Other than that, he was in pretty good shape.
“Looking at Boo you could tell that he was at least being fed because he wasn’t skin and bone like a lot of the dogs that I rescue,” Oliver said.
He suspects that Boo had been lingering around the mattress because it smelled like his owners.
Boo’s sad story made headlines around the U.S. but it ended up having a happy ending.
Boo was now in the hands of people who cared for him and would be put up for adoption to find a loving forever home.
