“A dog is a man’s best friend.” We always hear that, and it is true.
Dogs have such big, golden hearts. Yes, they can be goofy, but imagine all the emotional support they give.
They can always sense if there is something wrong, even our deepest feelings. It always warms our hearts how they are all snuggly and sweet when we need them.
But dogs also deserve to have best friends.
Yes, we are their best friends as they are ours, but have you thought about what it would be like for a dog to have a best buddy? Probably another dog or animal?
Like how we form friendships in school, they can also make friends in the shelter, park, or even in the vet’s clinic.
Dave Schmidt found his best friend in Dexter.
When his fiancé moved in with him, they decided to adopt a rescue dog. She saw a photo of Dexter and showed it to him. They went to the shelter, and this sweet dog just leaned toward him, and they knew he was the dog they wanted.
He was a goofball and always wanted to play. That’s how he met his best friend in Doakes. Doakes was walking around the block when he saw Dexter. Dave was wary of letting him near Dexter.
Doakes went near Dexter, and they immediately played! Dexter found his bestie.
But their friendship had some challenges. Doakes came by one day, and Dave noticed that Animal Control was in the area. He saw how Doakes came without a collar. He hid him in their garage until Animal Control left.
Eventually, they found Doakes’ family, gave Doakes a collar, and told his owner not to remove it so that Animal Control won’t take him. The next day, Doakes went to their yard again, but he didn’t have his collar on, and days later, he was nowhere to be found.
Dave realized that Doakes might have been taken away to the shelter.
He knew he had to do something to save Doakes. He looked for him in a shelter that said Doakes wasn’t there, but in one of those cages with over 100 dogs, they found him looking all scared.
He took Doakes home and kept him inside so his owners would find him. He also knew he had to do something to give him a better, safer home.
Dave and his family decided to move to the country.
They had a fenced lawn where Dexter and Doakes could play all day. They ran around, chased each other, and slept beside each other when it was time to rest. Dexter was always the goofy one, while Doakes just went with the flow.

The two dogs filled Dave’s house with so much joy. But above all, he gave Doakes a safe place, and you can see it in his face that he is just grateful to have a happy home.
Dave also had a message for others who are thinking twice about getting a pet:

“I think if someone would just take their time and go to their local shelter and walk down the aisle and see the dogs in there. I don’t think that they’ll ever second guess if they should adopt or not.”
