You never know when you will have the chance to do something great. Sometimes it’s obvious, and sometimes it’s surprising. When a group of cyclists was out taking a ride and enjoying the day in Georgia, one of them noticed a little dog in the woods.
He appeared to have been hit by a car, and he needed help.
Jarrett Little first noticed the pup, and he and some of the other cyclists offered the dog food and water. They knew they couldn’t leave him behind, though, or else he would die. Little explained:
“We stopped to regroup, and he came out of the woods to greet us. He was really thin, ribs showing and had a lot of road rash and a broken leg.”
They weren’t sure how to get the dog to safety or where to take him, but they knew they had to try.
Little put the dog on his back and cycled back to town. Then, as fate would have it, they met a lady who couldn’t resist the adorable dog. Little said:
“Right when we returned to my local bike shop to get him some more water and food, we instantly ran into Mrs. Andrea who was in town from Maine. She decided to keep him and get him checked out medically. She paid for him to have his leg repaired with surgery and found an organization that could help get him back to Maine to live on her horse farm.”
Andrea Shaw named the dog Columbo, and he fits right in with her family.
It all worked out so perfectly that it’s almost like it was meant to be. Little is glad he saw the pup and that he and his friends chose to take him into town instead of just offering food and water and leaving him behind. He said:
“Had I been five mins earlier or five mins later, we wouldn’t have crossed paths with her. It’s pretty cool how far he’s come.”
Once Columbo was better, he had to make it back to Maine to be with his new owner.
Several people drove him there. Shaw explained:
“Bo traveled with 25 staples in his hind leg after having four pins to put in to stabilize the fractures and a full cast on a front leg to stabilize a broken toe. They gave him all his meds and kept him comfy until he was back in my arms.”
Once Bo got to his new owner, she was thrilled. He settled in, and she shared a photo of him at his new home. She posted it with the caption:
“Thank you SO much for getting Columbo safely from GA to Maine. I can’t say enough great things about his driver’s!!!!”
This little dog is lucky in many ways.
Not only did he meet up with some kind cyclists at just the right time, he also managed to find someone who would give him medical care and a new home. Some dogs never get rescued, and had things went just a little differently for this pup, he might not have had a happy ending.
Everyone who was involved in the care of this dog is a hero, and hopefully, this story will motivate others to help animals in need.
You never know when you will be called on to do something. In this case, these cyclists were meant to find this dog and help bring him to the woman who will love him for the rest of his life. Columbo is now healthy and happy, and he will never have to worry about being lost, lonely, and scared ever again.
