When we open our eyes to the natural world around us, it’s pretty amazing what we can find.
Though we pass through nature everyday, we rarely stop to think about how it works—and that line of thinking often extends to how we deal with animals as well. While many of us may have cats and dogs living with us in our homes, we don’t often consider how their minds work and how they think.
Beyond our domesticated animals, we may not even think at all about animals in the wild as well. As it turns out, there are plenty of animals out there with plenty of intelligence and problem solving skills that we may never consider.
For a prime example of this, just consider the crow!
While we often think of dolphins or chimps when considering smart animals, crows are right up there at the top as well.
Generally speaking, scientists have said that adult crows tend to have the intelligence of about a seven-year-old human child.
In various tests, crows have shown that they have a conception of self, the ability to solve complex problems and the ability to complete complex communication tasks as well. Beyond the science, though, there are plenty of examples out there of people having their own run-ins with crows.
One recent video of a clever little crow proves this all too clearly.
As the clip begins, everyone can see that there’s a crow walking on the outside ledge of a high window on an office building.
The people inside the office see the crow and move closer to the window, first with pieces of bread and without opening the window so that the bird can actually eat the pieces. Still, he starts by tracking the movements of the bread inside the window and walking wherever the people move.
After a few moments of this, the folks inside finally decide to open the office window up.
Seemingly enough, the crow has finally got what it wanted by getting a piece of bread.
Still, once the office workers fed the crow some bread and shut the window again, he still didn’t seem to be satisfied. On their end, they just figured that the crow was still hungry and wanted even more of a snack, so they opened the window once again. The second time they opened it, the crow decided to proceed right inside.
Although the bread was there on the counter he walked right past it and grabbed a spoon from the counter!
By this point, everyone in the office is shocked and nobody in there can stop laughing!
After taking the spoon, the crow quickly walks back out of the window and onto the ledge where nobody can reach him. After that, he takes the spoon in his beak and starts experimenting with how it works.
He can scoop up snow with it, he can twist it around and he can hold it from any position—meanwhile, there’s no way for the office workers to get it back!
After a few more moments, the crow seems satisfied with himself and flies away!
Although this video is pretty harmless (and pretty hilarious), let it be a lesson to you: don’t underestimate crows!
Though it’s easy to think of the world in human-centric terms, clips like this one show us that the world is a lot more complicated than we might think. All the animals around us live their own complex lives and have their own thoughts, many of which we underestimate. At least the more we see videos of crows tricking humans, the more that thought might stick with us!
