Steve Irwin, the famous TV personality and ‘Crocodile Hunter,’ passed away in 2006, but his memory is still very much alive today.

Steve, the loving father with a big, fun personality, passed away 12 years ago at the age of 44. Sadly, he died when a stingray pierced his heart with its barb while doing a nature documentary. It was a terribly tragic day for his millions of fans, and of course, his family.

Surrounded by fans, friends, and family of the beloved animal conservationist and TV star, each family member shared emotional words.

“We try to continue dad’s legacy each and every day. I’m going to get a little bit emotional because it’s such a special day,” 19-year-old Bindi said during her speech, wiping away tears and giving her mother a hug.

“I have to tell you that I, never in my wildest dreams, imagined that this would become a reality, and this is such an honor as a family to continue in dad’s footsteps … So thank you for being here today and supporting us.”

“And you know what? We’ll always be a family. So congratulations and woohoo,” Bindi added. Then, her family posed near the star with a giant anaconda.

Bindi spoke with ET’s Lauren Zima after the ceremony and told her just how meaningful this moment was to her, her family, and most of all – her dad.

“It’s been over 10 years now, and the grief is always going to be there, but I think now, it’s moving forward and remembering everything dad worked so hard for. And this is a celebration of his life and it’s always going to be emotional, but I think these are just happy and proud tears. We miss him so much.”

14-year-old Robert added that not only was he the “best and most incredible conservationist on the planet, but also the best dad.”

Of course, his wife Terri spoke incredibly highly about her late husband. She too had an emotional message about a lesson that Steve taught her in life.

“I have been so privileged to have had the biggest adventure with Steve. Every single day was like being in the middle of a cyclone. We never knew where we were going to go or what we were going to do,” she said. “I learned from Steve that everyone just needs to say yes to stuff. Take a page out of Steve’s book and love everything.”

Robert recalls his dad always saying ‘I don’t care if people remember me, I want them to remember my message,’ so receiving this star was a wonderful way to celebrate that message.

“And so to continue that and have that in the forefront of people’s minds, it’s really what he would have wanted. So it’s really great to celebrate everything that he loved and to get everyone really passionate about the cause,” Robert said.

In addition to the incredible honor of receiving a Hollywood star, the Irwin family promises to continue his efforts and conserve wildlife. In fact, they even have a new show about their animal conservation adventures called ‘The Irwin Family.
