Not all cow farms are created equal, and some people don’t always put the animals wellbeing first. Maybelle was one such cow who spent her whole life on a dairy farm operating under terrible conditions. But after she was found, she was quickly rescued by the Gentle Barn Sanctuary in California.
But when she got to her new, more comfortable home, she wouldn’t stop crying.
For days her rescuers couldn’t figure out what was making her so upset. Surely she didn’t miss the horrible environment where she had been living.
But when the rescuers noticed her udders were full, they realized what was going on.
It became clear that she had recently had a baby, and the little calf had tragically been left behind at the previous farm.
“In my experience, with all the cows we have taken into the Gentle Barn, the only reason they ever cry like that is because they’re looking for a baby.” – Ellie Laks
Her rescuers immediately got in contact with her old owners to see if there was a newborn calf left behind.
They could have simply called, but one of the people at The Gentle Barn went a step further and went straight to the dairy farm to investigate himself.
The owner of the dairy farm were co-operative and agreed to let the rescuer bring the baby calf away with him.
“I hope this brings joy to your family.” – the dairy farmer
Still not entirely sure that the calf he had in the trailer was the right one, the rescuer took a chance and hoped he could reunite mother and daughter.
The entire time he was on his mission to bring the baby home, Maybelle never stopped crying out for her calf.
She never gave up hope!
The moment that the calf arrived at the Gentle Barn, everyone was eager to see what happened. But before the car even stopped, Maybelle was still crying out for her baby, and the baby started calling back.
Maybelle rushed towards the trailer, while the two of them continued to call back and forth.
We might not understand what they’re saying, but the sentiment is clear.
The little one came trotting straight out of the shipping box and towards his mom.
Their reunion is enough to bring tears to your eyes. You can see all is right in Maybelle’s world again.
Cows are separated from their mothers frequently, and most never get the chance to find each other again. No matter what the species, babies should always be able to stay with their mothers. I can’t think of anything more heartbreaking.

Thankfully the team was there to rescue Maybelle, and had the wherewithal to go back and rescue her calf as well. Who knows what could have happened to the young calf otherwise.
