There is something honorable about allowing a pet to live out its last days with dignity. One couple has devoted their lives to rescuing older dogs that nobody else wants. They call it the Mr. Mo Project.
Sadly, senior dogs are often abandoned at shelters.
Most senior dogs have lived their lives with one family. When the dog becomes difficult to upkeep or the medical expenses are too much, people will just leave them on the front doors of shelters and never show up again. The tricky part is that many people who are coming in to adopt a pet are looking for a puppy or younger dog, not an older one.
This influx of senior dogs makes it difficult for shelters to handle the strain.
The financial strain that is then put on shelters forces their hand in some capacities. When you have a dog that will never be adopted with a $5,000 surgery that may or may not work, euthanization is often the easiest course of action.
That’s where Mr. Mo comes in.
Chris and Mariesa have devoted their lives to rescuing senior dogs from shelters. Their work has saved over 500 animals and provided immeasurable joy and happiness for hundreds of dogs.
More than just adoption, they pay for their medical expenses.
Chris and Mariesa do more than just provide a home for the senior animals; they take on their medical expenses! This is a massive feat and has saved the lives of dozens of dogs.
The Mr. Mo Project began with their first-ever senior rescue.
Wanting to help out their local shelter, the couple decided that they wanted to give care packages to the senior dogs. They couldn’t stop with just a few care packages, though! The couple had a huge heart, and the project grew to match it.
Eventually, the couple began taking dogs from the shelters.
Starting from their local shelter, the operation expanded. They now have furry seniors from almost everywhere in the country, and even one from Canada!
After over six years, the project has saved over 500 dogs and given them a new and happy life.
The amount of compassion is impossible to measure. Five hundred dogs saved is a feat that few shelters could even boast!
Moses was the inspiration for it all.
Their first senior adoption was a furry friend named Moses. His time at the shelter was over, and the couple knew he belonged with them.
Sadly, Moses was given four weeks to live soon after taking him in.
As Mariesa was watching Moses one day, she realized he was a bit wobbly, concerning her and prompting a vet visit. After some testing, Moses was diagnosed with severe spinal tumors and was given four weeks to live.
The passing of Moses made the couple realize how many senior dogs were being put down simply because of cost.
The Mr. Mo Project was born! Coming up with the slogan “The best or the rest,” the couple continues their work to this day. Their goal is to provide the best life for the dogs for the rest of their lives.
With supporters across the world, the couple can do some incredible things.
Taking in dogs that nobody else takes is a huge commitment. In a video by The Dodo, Chris said:
“What shelters have noticed with us is that we take dogs that others won’t take. You know, a $10,000 spinal surgery, as long as the dog is OK for it, we don’t bat an eye.”
There are even times where the couple hasn’t raised funds through their organization and decide to take on the cost themselves.
The absolute generosity and dedication of Chris and Mariesa Hughes are inspiring and heartwarming.
