For many pet owners, the worst thing that can happen is losing a pet in a freak accident. This is what Tennessee couple Kip and Barret McLaughlin had to endure after losing their three dogs in a wildfire.
The couple took their beloved pups with them on a weekend away to a cabin in the woods.
One night, while they went out for dinner they returned to find that the entire community was being evacuated and no one was allowed to return to their homes.
Instantly, the couple feared for their dog’s lives.
The next day, after a sleepless night of dread and concern – their fears were confirmed.
The McLaughlin’s had the support of their friends, their family and the whole community who knew just how special these dogs were to their lives. Still, they were shattered by the event and struggled to move forward.
That was until they knew they were ready to help other dogs in need of a good home and show them the same love and support.
They surveyed several shelters before they made their decision. As soon as they met Dudley, they knew he was the right one for them.
Dudley is a 9-year-old black pug with faded white fur around his eyes. They instantly fell in love.
The next dogs they looked at were a pair of Boxer sisters who had been heavily bonded, so they decided to take them both.
The McLaughlins lovingly described them as a handful while adding they wouldn’t have them any other way.
“It’s definitely a lot better to have footsteps back in the house that isn’t mine or Barrett’s,” said Kip.
“Having the puppy breath and the reason to get out of bed in the morning … it’s definitely nice to have the companionship back.”
After losing a pet, life can be difficult and the morning process certainly takes time. Kip wants others to harbor the same attitudes they do towards rescues. He wants to stress that there is light at the end of the tunnel and if you’re willing, there are always more pups out there in need of love and affection.
