In 2016, police officer Cody Garrett was on call one rainy night near his hometown in South Carolina. As Garrett patrolled his city, he heard about some other officers rescuing a tiny ginger kitten from a dumpster.

The cops rescued the kitten just in time—soon after they picked her up, there was a flash flood in the area. Without the cops’ help, she might have drowned.

“It was raining outside pretty bad,” Garrett told Huffington Post. “She’s the smallest kitten I’ve ever seen.”

When Garrett got back to the police station after his shift, he met the little kitten. He immediately fell in love with her.

The other cops didn’t want to take the kitten home, and so Garrett instantly said he would adopt her. The timing was perfect—Garrett’s other cat, Toothless, had just had kittens, and she was still nursing. Garrett hoped Toothless would let the kitten nurse too, and thankfully, she did!

Garrett named the little kitten Squirt. She quickly settled into life at Garrett’s house. She even grew a mustache to match her dad’s!

Garrett posted the adorable photo of him and Squirt in his police car on his Instagram page, and it quickly went viral.

Everyone loved the heart-meltingly cute photo of Garrett and Squirt, and Garrett even got a few marriage proposals. Garrett let everyone know that he’s happily in a relationship—and thankfully, his girlfriend took it all in stride.

“She knows I love her,” he said.

Garrett took Squirt into his patrol car a few times to help him fight crime. But most of the time, though, Squirt hangs out at home with Garrett’s other cats and his dog. Squirt loves hanging out with all the other animals—she’s as sweet as can be!

Squirt isn’t the only animal Garrett has rescued.

Around the same time as he adopted Squirt, Garrett saved a blind, elderly dachshund who was wandering around the street on his own. He also rescued a group of abused puppies who badly needed help. Thanks to Garrett, all of these animals have found good homes!

Now, Squirt is two years old, but she’s still as sweet and loving as when she was a kitten.

Garrett has now retired from the force, giving him plenty of time to spend with his family. Garrett’s pets all love him, and they’re all excited when they get to spend time with him.
