As a cop, you never quite know what each day will bring.
And over a long career, it’s safe to say that most police officers have seen it all.
This was an exception.
Two officers were working just outside of Minneapolis when they had a day that they’ll likely never forget.
It was a routine afternoon for officers Tony Weeks and Jeremy Halek of the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
Until it wasn’t.
They were patrolling the city like they often did when they came across a young man on the side of the road.
He was out of his car and appeared to be bent over something in the grass.
On closer inspection, the two officers discovered 19-year-old Chris Felix performing CPR. On a squirrel.
They couldn’t believe it.
Felix, who works as a car cleaner at the local Subaru shop, was driving along when a squirrel ran into the side of his car.
He couldn’t just keep driving.
He knew he had to make sure the little fella was okay.
Felix immediately stopped the car and got out to find the squirrel lying in the road, unconscious.
Rather than just drive away and let the poor little squirrel die, Felix jumped into action.
He moved the squirrel off the road and immediately started giving it chest compressions.
That’s when the officers showed up.
Footage on their dash and body cams revealed Felix was hard at work trying to save the tiny squirrel.
Unfortunately, he had been working with the little rodent for quite some time and it wasn’t showing any signs of life.
The cops stayed with the young man and watched him work, in case he needed any help. After a few more minutes, both officers were sure the squirrel was dead.
However, Felix wasn’t about to give up.
He continued his chest compressions until all of a sudden, the squirrel jumped to his feet and darted away, into the trees. Felix and the officers couldn’t believe it.
Felix was overjoyed and immediately started giving high fives to the officers who couldn’t believe that the CPR had actually worked.
Felix’s actions that day remind us that no matter how small, all life is important and deserves to be saved.
The two officers claim that it was an event that the two of them are likely to never forget.
The experience helped shape Felix’s goals, too.
He plans to pursue a career in medicine as he gets older. That seems like the perfect profession for such a caring and altruistic kid.
Way to go, Felix!
If he is capable of showing that much consideration for a squirrel, then there’s no telling just how intentional and caring he will be with his fellow humans.
So the next time that you are out and about, be sure to take the time to notice the little things in life. You never know just how much you may be needed.
