Sadly, not everyone realizes police officers are just humans like you and I. But as part of the work they do, not only do they handle super challenging calls but also some you might not expect. Included in their training, they learn to deal with all sorts of situations, including those that involve animals.
But many cops are also pet owners. So, when they see a creature in distress, they take action. Fortunately for all of us, someone was kind enough to share photos of what happened during an ordinary day on the job.
Something unusual
While on patrol, Massachusetts State Trooper, Jim Maloney, saw something he doesn’t usually see. In a parking lot at Nahant Beach, he spotted a mother duck that looked as though she was worried about something.
An observant eye
With years of training and experience to notice details, he picked up on two things. First, the mother duck didn’t have any ducklings anywhere near. Second, she was staying in the middle of the road near a storm drain.
He decided to investigate
Feeling as though something wasn’t right, Trooper Maloney exited his patrol car. Then, he slowly made his way over to where the mother duck stood. As he knelt to peer inside the drain, he realized why she was in distress.
An “aha” moment
As Trooper Maloney looked deep into the hole, he saw a bunch of tiny ducklings. In looking closer, it wasn’t just one or two but eight ducklings in all. Without his help, there was no way for them to get out.
Calling for backup
Since Trooper Maloney didn’t have the proper gear to reach the ducklings, he called for reinforcement in the way of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). As experts who deal with situations like this all the time, they’d know what to do.
More help arrived
Along with members of DCR, other people from different organizations came to help, including Nahant’s Department of Public Works and the Lynn Animal Control. Everyone was worried since they had no clue how long the ducklings had been separated from their mom. Under normal circumstances, they’d never be apart.
They devised a plan
For starters, they needed a crowbar. With the grate covering the storm drain firmly in place, it wasn’t going to budge without this particular piece of equipment. So, DCR asked someone to bring what they needed to free the ducklings.
Time to get to work
Now with the tools needed for the job, the team went to work. Carefully, they inched the grate off. Then, they used a net to gently scoop the ducklings out of the storm drain. One by one, they placed them inside a box.
Safe at last
Finally, they had all eight ducklings in one, safe place. In the meantime, the mother duck patiently looked on. Although she’s a wild animal, it was as though she knew these people were there to help her and her babies.
A good lesson
This story offers more than one good lesson. First, most cops are good hearted individuals who care about human and animal life. Second, if you ever come across a situation like this, various organizations exist to help.
Here’s a big shoutout to Trooper Maloney and the entire team who reunited a mother duck with her ducklings. We all love happy endings and this is definitely one of them.
