On a regular Sunday night patrol, Massachusetts State Trooper Carlo Mastromattei was alerted to a wounded puppy on the road.

Expecting to find a dog, he was taken aback when he discovered a terrified little coyote pup instead.

The location was the bustling Revere Beach Parkway near Suffolk Downs, and the sight of the vulnerable creature amidst the chaos was heart-wrenching.

Mastromattei scanned the surroundings, hoping to spot the pup’s mother, but she was nowhere in sight.

Realizing the imminent danger the young coyote was in, with the risk of being hit by a car or facing other threats, he immediately contacted local wildlife and animal control authorities.

However, to his dismay, no one was available to come to the rescue.

But Trooper Mastromattei wasn’t one to abandon a creature in need.

Remembering his acquaintance with Lisa Cutting, the owner of Ocean View Kennels, he gave her a call.

Without hesitation, Ocean View Kennels jumped into action, assisting Mastromattei in safely placing the coyote pup into a crate.

In a touching gesture, Cutting named the pup “Carlo” in honor of Mastromattei’s valiant efforts.

Describing the scene, Lisa Cutting recounted to CBS Boston, “The baby coyote was leaning against the sidewalk in fear.

He was frozen with fear.” She added, “If they can be helped, saved, rescued, rehabbed, they deserve that chance.

Put my gloves on. Grabbed a towel and a quarantine cage, and picked him up and brought him to safety. They all deserve a chance, and Carlo got it.”

With the coyote pup now safely crated, Mastromattei took him to his girlfriend’s residence.

Both being ardent animal lovers, they were confident in their ability to provide the necessary care for the pup overnight.

Their plan was to ensure the pup’s well-being until he could be transferred to Tufts Wildlife in North Grafton the following day.

The next day, as planned, Ocean View Kennel transported the young coyote to Tufts Wildlife.

The professionals there were pleased to find that the pup was in good health.

The next step in his journey would be a trip to a wildlife specialist in the Berkshires.

There, he would undergo rehabilitation and gradually acclimate to the wild, preparing for his eventual release.

The Massachusetts State Police took to their Facebook page to express their profound gratitude.

Their statement read, “The Department offers its sincere thanks to Trooper Mastromattei, his girlfriend, Ocean View Kennels, and Tufts for their compassionate care for this beautiful little creature.”

This heartwarming tale of rescue and compassion resonated with many, as the post quickly garnered over 3,000 shares on Facebook.
